The Valkyrie Eye…

Im taking a break from politics, hence look elsewhere for juicy stuff. Right now Im typing and reading with one eye. Yup one eye. I feel like Im taking Tom Cruise’s part in his latest movie Valkyrie sans the black eye patch. I still don’t know what the optician called it, but umm the minute he stared at my eyes through his machine, the first words he uttered were “OH SHIT” I mean how professional can one be.

I sat there with my chin sticking out flickering my eyes. “What is it Dr? Is it THAT bad?” He didn’t even bother replying, instead he ushered my HUBBY and asked him to take a look. Hmmm, is this some kinda male conspiracy? HELLOOOOO this is my eye youre staring at, and I need to know. My HUBBY was far more polite and instead of the “Oh shit” he was like “Oh wow”. Ok great, thanks for making me feel at ease.

After that fiasco I was told that I had an extreme phase of some kinda contact lens infection, had I waited one more day, I woulda gone blind (Doctor’s exact words). Hmmm, that’s extremely re-assuring Dr. That’s what I love about Middle Eastern Doctors, they have such a way with words, it truly amazes me.

So yeah right now Im on killer antibiotics and some weird gel that I have to stick in my eye every five hours. Wooohoooo. Oh and to top it all off, I cant wear my contacts for weeks to come, thank god I have trendy glasses on. All this got me thinking. Ever since I left Baghdad things have gone down hill. Hmmm, maybe I should think of going back. Actually there’s something that is kinda worrying me, and relaying it here will probably make people think Im crazy. Did I say Crazy? Whats new, I am Neurotic after all. So here goes.

Ever since I was young and even now, everytime I had my coffee cup read, I was told I had evil eyes (il 3ain) on me. Hence my obsession with wearing the evil eye to ward off any evil. I wear a bunch of bracelates with cute coloured eye crystals, I wear a choker like necklace that my eldest sister gave me on my birthday, I have a blue stone along with the word Allah dangling from my watch, everything I can find with the eye on it, I just use it. On our last trip to Turkey, I bought a cute ceramic fridge magnet, yup an eye. It lasted on the fridge four months, UNTIL. Until the day before I traveled to Amman. Out of the blue without even touching the fridge, the eye fell and broke in two halves!!! Can you believe this shit? I just stood there, my mouth agape, staring at the broken pieces in disbelief.

I freaked out. Freaked out big time and called both my mom and my sister. You see, evil eyes and envy is written in our Quran and some hadiths and I really do believe in it. My mom and sis freaked out as well, lol. Didn’t really make things easier on me, as I wanted them to say positive stuff. My mom, the pious woman she is, asked me to recite a specific verse many times and hope for the best. This is exactly what I did and I forgot about the whole thing.

But with all the mis-haps that’s taking place with me right now, my operation (long story, some other time), my blasting headaches, my eye infection, my hair going all weird on me, all within a month from the eye breaking, I do believe that someone, somewhere is casting the evil eye spell on me. My question is, why? Why me? Theres nothing to envy me about. Nothing to be jealous from. A BIG FAT NOTHING. Ughhhhh

Sorry, just needed to vent as HUBBY doesn’t believe in this stuff. He thinks Im crazy and that I take things into extremes. Umm HUBBY, Im sorry, but an eye breaking out of the blue is no joke. I did google it though second it happened (Don’t you just love Google). Some articles said that an eye breaking means it did all it can do to ward off the evil. Oh great. What about the rest of the evil? Now what?

Oh well, evil or no evil, for now, I just have one functioning eye :(, The Valkyrie Eye…

Well NIW,

Envy is mentioned in the Bible too but we have to pray to God to keep the evil away from us and keep us saved.

Stay safe, you'll be in my prayers tonight :)

I think my teeth changed color. I used to save the little ones.

NIW,

LOL, your post was definitely better than the movie (yawn). But the Valkyrie Eye reference was hilariois. It made laugh a little on a hectic day at work. I too had to put that goop in my eye before it's gross!!! It's funny you mention the evil eye, I had never heard of it until I took a trip to Greece a few years ago, I asked an elder why everyone was either wearing or carrying these beads and that was the first time I had ever heard of it. I brought back evil eye beads for everyone I know and I have one hanging on my bed post to ward off any evil. Unfortunately it has warded off anything evil or good in that department. Anyway, I hope your eye heals up well and you have no more problems.

January 26, 2009 at 10:44 PM

Thanks for the new topic! It was starting to dangerous back there!

January 26, 2009 at 11:11 PM

I heard that having children is the best way to permanently cancel any kind of evil eye.

January 27, 2009 at 12:17 AM

I guess all societies believe in some kind of superstition, and the remedies for warding off the boogey man. Reading this is almost like the 'bad juju' believed in Africa. I am surprised Neuro' that you believe in such superstitions, usually they are found in less modern societies.
But some would think that being a follower of Christ's would make me superstitious. Luckily I was given promises, that I don't have to worry about curses.
Good luck with the eye thing. And apparently 'Anon' as the sure fired cure for the evil eye.

January 27, 2009 at 2:57 AM

Edit_mommies your popularity is soaring. You are mentioned in another blog. You should start your own.

So I was blogging the other day on one of my favorite blogs, http://neurotic-iraqi-wife.blogspot.com/, and was engaged in a serious debate. Well right in the middle of the dabate a lady, who knows I'm the Conservative Gardener, gave me a Garden Flip-Off :

"Until you have life growing in your womb, your opinion means nothing to someone who needs financial support to provide a medical need to end a the growth of a life so that can she can support the life that is already here. Go plant some artichokes and while you are at it, please tell Edit _ Mommies about ..........."

January 27, 2009 at 5:31 AM

Hiya MM. Really? I never knew its mentioned in the Bible. Eeeee please pray for me :) I really need it.

EM, mine too. Do you suggest any good toothpaste? Lol

Kathy, you didnt like the movie? I loved it!!!I thought it was one of the good ones I have watched so far, but what I dont understand why was it so controversial? As for the eye, I really believe in it. I have seen and expreienced crazy stuff from envious people!

Lol CG, I knoooooooooooooooooow. Man you guys just go on forever. Btw I tried commenting on your blog, but kept giving me an error :( I just wanted to tell you that in Islam a woman does get stoned to death for adultry, but inorder for her to be accused, there must be 4 witnesses i think to have witnessed the act...

Anon, I doubt thats true. My sis in law has 2 kids and somehow the evil eye follows her too...

WH, well its mentioned in our Quran, so its not really superstition. And as I mentioned earlier, I witnessed so much crap from envious people. One time, this lady comes to dinner at my parents place. My mom has a love for antiques, so anyhow, this lady had her eyes popping out at some crystal my mom had on display, it was from Iraq, the lady was like, wowwwww this is beautiful I wish I had one too. I swear to you, without any exxageration, the crystal fell and broke that minute. My mom never asked the lady to her house again, lol. So yes we believe in it...Oh well

January 27, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Loved your post, I am just like you......I have evil eyes all over my house, car, work, my kids, lol. Here is a site that has some awesome evil eye products.

NIW- I posted your comment for you, but come back and visit! Maybe you can learn how to grow fresh tomatoes for the HUBBY.

But don't argue with me over there, it's a peaceful site!! (I think I'm just kidding)

January 27, 2009 at 4:03 PM

NIW - I'm not really a big fan of Tom Cruise, maybe that's why I just could not get interested in the movie. I'm sure i will get alot of backlash for this but I think he is overrated. The only controversy I heard of regarding the movie was from Germany. I don't remember exactly what the controversy was about. I think maybe the people did'nt like the way they were portrayed as brainwashed Nazi's, but I'm not sure. Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? I loved it.

January 27, 2009 at 7:07 PM

I wear a piece of turquoise for evil eye, as recommended by a muslim geology professor I know. Now as soon as I take it off, bad things happen!

January 27, 2009 at 9:36 PM

I used the toilet today. Evidently I am bleeding internally. My Dad says I have to change my diet and be more careful exercising. I use Crest brand toothpaste religiously. I like the color of my teeth, antique.

January 27, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Kathy - The controversy was over his scientology membership. I think Germany considers scientology a cult.

January 27, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Neurotica, It never ceases to amaze me that we still tend to believe a grandma kind of story/explanation and choose to overlook the scientific explanations! may be because it is more interesting? I don't know. I am not a superstitious person so I agree with you hubby on this one. Take care.

January 27, 2009 at 10:49 PM

Thanks TCG, You are right, I needed some prodding to recall my memory.

January 27, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Neurotica - Sorry to hear about your eye. I hope it is getting better fast. Interesting enough though after reading your blog, I woke up this morning and my EYES were burning so bad I couldn't put in my CONTACTS. All day they hurt like I've been in a sandstorm. Where do I get an EYE to protect me???? or maybe two so I can get a COL's attention??? NAW

Here you go this is an Introductory Speech for Speech Class in the morning.

Wealthy animals are often amphibious and comfortably nocturnal. As often as there is sky these creatures assemble within a black magnetic strip of unknown space. I am the greatest threat to the animals and their environment. My name is ______________. I am dependent on intelligent design.
Witnessing the decline of the audio cassette is a personal vindication I reserve for summer months. The fragile state of a Vinyl Record commanded a level of care leaving most automotive dashboards unfulfilled. 8-track Cassettes weren't keeping pace with assembly line production after 1970. My life began right before 1980. The first Audio Tape Cassettes were not played in dash mounted players. I remember this rectangle that I associated with the affectionate term, “Double Door”. It made the purest noise through these tiny holes circular and as large as the circumference of my tiny head. I was completely dependent upon the device from infancy. My Mother was progressed in song and I took the device as a surrogate. I had developed an ordinary attachment to absolutely nothing at all. Year after year I faithfully observed the slow decline of these Tape Machines. Meanwhile the birds went right on chirping, insects buzzing. The most rewarding aspect of owning modern musical devices is learning how they work. Of course if you want to use them you can only know so much about their inner make-up. Patience is the greatest virtue owed to us by our plastic counterparts. As time progresses the secrets of invention are revealed with decline. Audio Cassette machines were especially tricky to maintain. Often the Cassette player was barely functional and the sound it made was team effort. Today I have a new noise making machine called a Computer. I know how dumb and fragile a computer is. All that is dumb and fragile is drawn into this computer. I can only wait for the computer's decline...and let the music play. Thank you for being an audience have a good morning.

Turqouise.....I love Turqoise NIW. Where can I find an eye necklace in turquoise? My eyes still hurt........I grew up in Bisbee, AZ, the turqoise capital of the world. Oh how I love that stone.

Conservative Gardener......I bet some of the 'women' who were arguing with you were perhaps just one woman with many points of view, or personalities. But don't worry, I didn't save any of my little teeth. The tooth fairy took mine. I wanted the money instead. NAW

I hate to beat a dead horse....but come on! You can talk about brain waves and body organs all day but this is what happens when you play God and determine when a baby becomes a human:

Fla. doctor investigated in badly botched abortion

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO
Associated Press Writer

Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure.

Only Renelique didn't arrive in time. According to Williams and the Florida Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl.

What Williams and the Health Department say happened next has shocked people on both sides of the abortion debate: One of the clinic's owners, who has no medical license, cut the infant's umbilical cord. Williams says the woman placed the baby in a plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

Police recovered the decomposing remains in a cardboard box a week later after getting anonymous tips.

"I don't care what your politics are, what your morals are, this should not be happening in our community," said Tom Pennekamp, a Miami attorney representing Williams in her lawsuit against Renelique (ren-uh-LEEK') and the clinic owners.

The state Board of Medicine is to hear Renelique's case in Tampa on Friday and determine whether to strip his license. The state attorney's homicide division is investigating, though no charges have been filed. Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office, said this week that prosecutors were nearing a decision.

Renelique's attorney, Joseph Harrison, called the allegations at best "misguided and incomplete" in an e-mail to The Associated Press. He didn't provide details.

The case has riled the anti-abortion community, which contends the clinic's actions constitute murder.

"The baby was just treated as a piece of garbage," said Tom Brejcha, president of The Thomas More Society, a law firm that is also representing Williams. "People all over the country are just aghast."

Even those who support abortion rights are concerned about the allegations.

"It really disturbed me," said Joanne Sterner, president of the Broward County chapter of the National Organization for Women, after reviewing the administrative complaint against Renelique. "I know that there are clinics out there like this. And I hope that we can keep (women) from going to these types of clinics."

According to state records, Renelique received his medical training at the State University of Haiti. In 1991, he completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Interfaith Medical Center in New York.

New York records show that Renelique has made at least five medical malpractice payments in the past decade, the circumstances of which were not detailed in the filings.

Several attempts to reach Renelique were unsuccessful. Some of his office numbers were disconnected, no home number could be found and he did not return messages left with his attorney.

Williams struggled with the decision to have an abortion, Pennekamp said. She declined an interview request made through him.

She concluded she didn't have the resources or maturity to raise a child, he said, and went to the Miramar Women's Center on July 17, 2006. Sonograms indicated she was 23 weeks pregnant, according to the Department of Health. She met Renelique at a second clinic two days later.

Renelique gave Williams laminaria, a drug that dilates the cervix, and prescribed three other medications, according to the administrative complaint filed by the Health Department. She was told to go to yet another clinic, A Gyn Diagnostic Center in Hialeah, where the procedure would be performed the next day, on July 20, 2006.

Williams arrived in the morning and was given more medication.

The Department of Health account continues as follows: Just before noon she began to feel ill. The clinic contacted Renelique. Two hours later, he still hadn't shown up. Williams went into labor and delivered the baby.

"She came face to face with a human being," Pennekamp said. "And that changed everything."

The complaint says one of the clinic owners, Belkis Gonzalez came in and cut the umbilical cord with scissors, then placed the baby in a plastic bag, and the bag in a trash can.

Williams' lawsuit offers a cruder account: She says Gonzalez knocked the baby off the recliner chair where she had given birth, onto the floor. The baby's umbilical cord was not clamped, allowing her to bleed out. Gonzalez scooped the baby, placenta and afterbirth into a red plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

No working telephone number could be found for Gonzalez, and an attorney who has represented the clinic in the past did not return a message.

At 23 weeks, an otherwise healthy fetus would have a slim but legitimate chance of survival. Quadruplets born at 23 weeks last year at The Nebraska Medical Center survived.

An autopsy determined Williams' baby - she named her Shanice - had filled her lungs with air, meaning she had been born alive, according to the Department of Health. The cause of death was listed as extreme prematurity.

The Department of Health believes Renelique committed malpractice by failing to ensure that licensed personnel would be present when Williams was there, among other missteps.

The department wants the Board of Medicine, a separate agency, to permanently revoke Renelique's license, among other penalties. His license is currently restricted, permitting him to only perform abortions when another licensed physician is present and can review his medical records.

Should prosecutors file murder charges, they'd have to prove the baby was born alive, said Robert Batey, a professor of criminal law at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport. The defense might contend that the child would have died anyway, but most courts would not allow that argument, he said.

"Hastening the death of an individual who is terminally ill is still considered causing the death of that individual," Batey said. "And I think a court would rule similarly in this type of case."

So what difference between aborting inside the body or outside the body? There is no logical answer because it's wrong both ways.

Hello,
My name is Allie and I am a student at the University of Vermont in the United States. I am 20 years old. I have found your blog very interesting. I cannot imagine how hard it is for you to be away from someone you love because of the Iraq war. I am very sorry to hear about your eye I hope things are going better for you. I guess the post I related to the most was the one about Obama. I agree that many Americans (myself included) can finally be proud of our country. Trust me many people over here are also crossing our fingers that all goes well these next four years. It is a hopeful thing to hear that people in other countries are as optimistic as students are over here are that some things will change. I know that decisions made in Washington will affect both of our lives. Hopefully one day you can safely be with you husband in Iraq.
