Chaotic Mayhem of the Middle East...

We have been travelling hence the lack of posts. Our travel coincided with the atrocities in Gaza. As we got into the cab from the airport to our way to the hotel, we heard the news on the radio that was blasted so high with the latest news. I only realized how bad things were in Gaza when I immediately switched the TV on in our room. WOW.

The images only reminded me of Iraq. Of Lebanon. The graphic pictures of bloodied corpses of children shrouded in white being paraded in the streets made my tears stream down my cheeks. I am not a mother, yet I could feel their pain. I could feel their outrage. WHY, WHY I kept asking. Why do this. Im definitely not a Hamas supporter, but why this. Why innocent people?

Every cab we got into, the popular Quranic verses were substituted by the news. Every shop we entered had the TV's on with the same images over and over again. I came here to try and relax, yet I feel my blood boiling. HUBBY wanted to go to some Iraqi place to celebrate the New Years, we had already gotten the tickets, but to be honest I wasnt really upto going anywhere. I just wanted to stay in the room, watch TV and sleep.

As we were sitting in the Lobby killing some time, an American reporter asked if it was ok to interview us. "I saw you guys reading an English Newspaper, can I ask you a few questions about the New Years?" She asked. HUBBY was reluctant, he doesnt like to do the talking. As for me, I didnt mind one bit. And so when asked what we thought about celebrations being cancelled here because of the Gaza news, I immediately answered that its only appropriate. How can people especially here in the Middle East feel happy when their fellow Arabs are suffering. When their fellow Arabs are being slaughtered in daylight. No, definitely its not a time to be joyous.

Coincidently as we were talking to her, the restaurant we were supposed to go to, called us and said the New Years do was cancelled. Yes thats the best way. The mood is somber everywhere. Even in the malls, all you hear people talk about is whats going on in Gaza. Many have the Palestinian scarves wrapped around them showing solidarity. We even witnessed some protests, but to me protests mean nothing. Nothing at all. Ive seen it before the Iraq war almost 6 years ago. I was one of them. Yet what did it achieve? It achieved nothing. Nothing at all.

Im not gonna say Im disgusted with the Arab governments response, or the lack of it. For Im not surprised. Not surprised at all. As one cab driver put it, Arabs are traitors, and rightly so. Arab jarab. Really. They stopped caring long time ago. Why cant people live in peace? Why cant they just move on. Why keep battling over a piece of land, kill hundreds of thousands of people, devastate families when both can live together on it. Im not even gonna play the blame game. Both sides are wrong. Violence will only harbour more violence, more deaths. More corpses.

Im gonna keep it at that for Im sick. Sick and tired of the Middle East. The Chaotic Mayhem of the Middle East...

Yes, it is sad that children have to suffer because of the hatred of people and/or their ideologies. WH

"Arabs ( Leaders and governments) are traitors, and rightly so. Arab jarab. Really."
If I may add, wish them all death for not doing the right thing at the right time.

I am so saddened and so frustrated...this is just a sad time in our lives to be "alive" and witnessing such genocide.

hope 2009 be a much better one for all.

Sssshhhh, it's the hidden secret of a Democracy, or the illusion of it, that the peoples' voice is listened too. But, don't we all live in an illusion of "our society is the best"? Are not all kingdoms ruled by force, no matter what banner they live under?

NIW,

What can I do but mourn the loss of human life alongside you.

Always,

Hmmm.... A few points:
1. A large number of rockets have been fired from the Gaza strip at Israeli civilian areas. This is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
2. Residents of Gaza have built military facilities within residential/civilian areas. This is a violation of Geneva Convention.
3. Israel is not required to avoid all civilian casualities when #2 has been violated.
4. Therefore, the residents of Gaza are morally and legally responsible for the deaths of many, if not all, of the civilians.

Speaking of the Geneva Convention, I wonder who will win, the American Water Boarding Championship this year.

January 4, 2009 at 4:01 PM

NIW have you read the book of Illan Pappe "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine"? It gives such a deep historic understanding to what happened to the Palestinians. I know a lot of people say they know a lot, but after reading that book I am sure the knowledge will be based on a lot of facts not known before.

As for you anon 5.03 I would have taken your views as someone who believes he/she cares about human rights and international law if you have also added all the crimes against humanity and international law that Israel has committed. Israel is an apartheid state. As South Africa was boycotted so should Israel too. South Africa is today a country where all people live under the same rule of law and freedom.

The solution for Palestine and Israel is a one state solution! And my personal suggestion would be for them all to turn their back on both the EU and the USA. Since these last two have only given the Palestinians and Israelis problems.

"I'm not even gonna play the blame game"???

"....their fellow Arabs are being slaughtered in daylight"?????

I don't get it. It doesn't seem like it should be this hard to figure out what's right & what's wrong. I'm amazed at the blindness. I bet it wouldn't be that hard for people to figure it out if someone said they were bent on YOUR destruction, no matter what.

What about the "slaughter" the rockets caused? Or Suicide bombs? The Bible was right when it said in Genesis that Ishmael would always fight his brother. I just wish he could stop himself.

Nadia.....

Apartheid??? Really?? Is it blindness....... or hate? I bet the latter. If you consider Israel an apartheid state then every country on Earth is one. Dummy. Even if you believe that the Hebrews have no right to live in Israel, which is dumb considering the fact they've got thousands of years of history there, you must realize every country had someone "occupying" it before the current "occupiers". Has Canada always been Canada? Has the US always been the US? Is Iran's boarder the same as it was 6,000 years ago? What about Iraq, Mexico, Nambia, Germany, Japan, India, UAB, Saudi Arabia, all the 'Stans, Brazil, Mongolia, Romania, Italy......etc?? We're all apartheid if you go by yours and Arabian logic. Israel was put together after WW II. Legally. It defended itself numerous times. Legally. It should do what all the rest of the apartheid countries have done. Defeat it's enemy and move on.

January 5, 2009 at 7:48 AM

Oh yeah.....I think the Alemanni should use suicide bombers to take back the aparhtheid state of Switzerland. They were there first.

January 5, 2009 at 7:54 AM

....or maybe the Mayans should use rockets to remove the "Occupiers" in Belize. After all they were there first.

Sorry but watching this from across the world, it's horrible no matter what way you look at it. I sit in dismay and wonder how human beings can even act this way. We are in the year 2009 and humans are still acting like these barbaric, medieval creatures that haven't evolved. It brings tears to my eyes. I don't think there's any explanation that could make it seem okay to me. NAW

January 5, 2009 at 11:22 AM

The part that i found to be most disgusting was when the Secretary of State for the United States (Condaleeza Rice) went on national television and stated that the Unites States stands behind Israel. They stand behind the kiling of innocent children and women, This is barbaric and I am in shock that the UN is doing nothing. As niw stated she is not a mother, yet she feels their pain. I am a mother and I cannot begin to fathom the pain, grief or anger that these mothers are feeling. My children are my life and I would have nothing to live for if I lost them. NIW, sorry about the rant I'm just mad as hell at the situation!!!

January 5, 2009 at 5:36 PM

If you feel their pain for the death of their children...then go out on the street and protest Hamas firing their rockets from residential areas. If you are horrified about the civilian casualties, the direct your anger at Hamas, for they are the ones who saw fit to fire an average of 59 rockets and mortars into civilian areas each and every week for the entire 15 month "cease fire" while Israel did not retaliate. Hamas places their positions in houses and neighborhoods because they want cameras to capture exactly the scenes you are describing when Israel tries to attack them. They don't care a lick about their own children...if they did, they wouldn't show them mickey mouse the suicide bomber cartoons and dress them up in fake suicide bomb vests for parties at age 5.

Israel pulled out of Gaza and gave it to the Palestinians. Israel has shown its willingness to make peace with rational Palestinians who also want peace. Hamas wants only war...and they have been given exactly what they want. So why should Israel stop? This is exactly what Hamas has been asking for...they want war with Israel...and Israel is obliging them. This whole conflict can end any time Hamas wants it to...they just have to want peace more than war...and clearly that is not the case right now. As long as Hamas wants war, Israel will give it to them.

And for those who say that the Palestinians are the victims of Hamas...keep in mind that Hamas was democratically elected to lead the Palestinian territories BY THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE! The people making war on Israel were elected by the people of Gaza to lead them. If a democratically elected government makes war on another country, why on earth should the other country be expected to refrain from responding?

January 5, 2009 at 7:16 PM

Tex,

I was not blaming one or the other. Sorry to see that you are so heartless that you cannot put yourself into others shoes and sympathize with their loss. It does not matter if they are Israeli or Palestinian the children and everyday civilians are the victims. I'm sure that every single Palestinian DID NOT vote for Hamas, just as many Americans did not vote for Bush but since Bush is so hated by the rest of the world, should all Americans have to suffer because of his policies?

January 5, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Kathy,

Your response to Tex would seem more sincere if you had posted the same comments 2 months ago about Israel's women & children being bombed by Hamas rockets.

January 5, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Julie,

Where were your comments two months ago? And as far as you being concerned about how sincere my comments are, does not really mean shit to me. I will try to explain it again in elementary terms so that you can comprehend. It does not matter if it is Israel or Hamas, innocent people are being killed daily and that is what I find horrific! And to answer your question (that is really none of your business) two months ago I was spending 24 hours a day at the childrens hospital with my son who had to undergo a kidney transplant so I am so sorry that I did not have time to stay up on current events at that time. It must be so easy for you to sit on your high horse and pass judgement on others.

January 5, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Just seems like a lot of people have time to come off their high horse whenever Israel moves an inch.

January 5, 2009 at 9:44 PM

I also think it does matter if it's Hamas or Israel who's responsible. If there is a right side or wrong side,(or maybe good & evil) we need to know so we can fight the wrong/evil. It's just the way it has to be. Unless you can gaurantee us that evil will never resort to war.

And just for the record, I think hiding in civilian houses and launching rockets is evil.

January 5, 2009 at 9:55 PM

Kathy,

The death of any child or innocent is always a tragedy. Don't let my words decive you into thinking that I devalue life on either side of the conflict. However, as I posted in response to Neurotica in her follow-on post, how is Israel supposed to respond? The reality of the situation is that it is very messy and there is no "ideal" solution available unless Hamas and the Palestinian people suddenly renounce terrorism and seek peace instead. Israel has offered every peace incentive possible, yet it has always been met with violence. Hamas refuses to honor cease fires even when they are the ones who request them. During the most recent "cease fire", Hamas fired an average of 8-9 rockets each and every day for more than a year. How is Israel supposed to respond? Understand that Gaza is a very densely populated place, Hamas deliberately places their fighting positions in residential areas, and then attacks Israel, knowing that if Israel retaliates, they will have video footage of blown up homes to show the world as evidence of "Israeli atrocities", when the real atrocity is placing the rocket launcher in a school yard in the first place, knowing that Israel will try to attack it eventually. How much blood is on Israel's hands when all they are trying to do is stop Hamas from indiscriminately attacking their civilians? Israel is using precision guided munitions and working hard to avoid civilian casualties wherever possible, while Hamas seeks to increase civilian casualties on both sides of the fight at every opportunity. Why is their such outrage at Israel when they take steps to protect civilians (even going so far as to warn people before they bomb some targets), while Hamas is given a free pass when they make deliberate efforts to increase civilian casualties?

Ballistic Toys for Tots. Then children can run their company. Qualifying an infrastructure teeming with Hypocrisy. I understand attending virtue is an immediate concern. I still would rather not have those people engage in the same system of Western poison. I don't think hiding and ballistic control will balance out neglect.
