My Shiny Iraqi Skyline

This is something you will not hear about in the majority of the media. I certainly havent heard about it before yesterday's conversation. Yesterday, yes and as I was out smoking :) I asked S about the Electricity situation. To be honest, I stopped asking my coworkers about it a long time ago, for I knew what the usual answer will be. But for some odd reason, S and I were talking in general when somehow the conversation took a turn towards Electricity.

S smiled and said, situation is extremely good. I couldnt believe my ears. I said S, Im talking about Electricity (Kahraba2). Yes I know, we are having about 5-6 hours a day instead of the 0-1 hour a few weeks ago, he continued. (and yes, 5-6 hours is really a gift for Iraqis for they are not blessed like the rest of the world).I was stunned. How come S? I mean thats good news, but what changed? Cuz I know the demand has increased incredibly in the last 2 or 3 years. And I also know that the supply of MW, will never reach 100%. Maximum it can reach is somewhere between 45-47%. So for S to tell me theyre getting it, something must have changed.

S said yes, theyre using solar energy now. Solar energy??? You are kidding right? I looked at S waiting for him to tell me he is pulling my leg.

No Neurotica Im serious. You see, they now installed the solar panels for many of the street lighting, inorder to take some of the load there so the homes can have electricity. They have done it in my neighbourhood. And a few others.

I really didnt believe S, so I searched the net and found this
Arabic article today . OMG. S wasnt lying. S was saying the truth. Funny enough, that light, that lost light of hope which I thought I will never ever see again, kinda shimmered at me from far far away.

Can it be? Can it be that one day, no one will ever ask the Iraqis whether they have electricity or not because that will just sound like an absurd thing to ask? Can it be? Can it be that the day will come when the Iraqis will not have to scram to wash clothes, take baths, clean homes and wash dishes in that one hour only opportunity? Can it be that generators will be something of the past? Something of the forgotten era?

Oh wow, can it be? Can it be that when inhabitants of the moon will look down on us one day, they would say "Wow, look down, look at that beautiful lit up Iraq?" Just like we do when we see the beautiful moon lighting our skies? Can it be? Yeah my light of hope is shimmering, the light is shimmering ever so faintly, but its there. Its there lighting the skyline. My Skyline. My Shiny Iraqi Skyline...

Electricity was hard to earn. I think the point Saddam and Kim Jin Ill were trying to make is that the 7 year old daughters of there countries don't look like Midget Tyra Banks.

So, do you hear of the increase of suicide bombings, 'if' there is an increase?
I guess you will need street lights, so the great conqueror of evil can see the Roses that have been cast at his feet, by the grateful Iraqi's.

NIW, as kid I used to get up early, sit on the back steps with my coffee and look up at the stars. They were beautiful then. As the years passed and the city grew, the stars were less visible. Sure is a sight though after being away on long trip and coming over the horizon to see the lights of the city welcoming me home. I'm glad to hear solar power is being used there. That's good stuff. Excellent, always good to have light. Speaking of light, does the fact that the U.S. had it largest loss of people in Afghanistan last month, of any month since the start of the war there, make it through your censors? I guess all the idealist who first thought that the 'new Iraq' would bring a new era have pretty well seen the light as well.

Olaf has memorized every intricate facet of the regions commodity prison or Hell. Who isn't familiar with the MC Escher Sketch, Drawing Hands(1948). The hypnotic representation of Infinity can cooperatively be performed in the form of a populated land mass. The dance that causes hysteria and in turn limits delusion. The dance of the last resort. It sounds great every Network Engineer hired is progress. The first shall be last and the Hardware will be manageable as if it were Software. Every 78 year old Dictator will understand that Oil doesn't equal love anymore. Ahem, that's so touching. Then evil people will appreciate minimalism as excess causes criminal distress and phobia. Maybe Medicine and Science can hide behind some sort of secret society like that crazy Jack the Ripper fairy tale? Then we'll let products choo choo choose our destiny. I think the first resort should have delusion and hysteria under control. Fating people makes us all feel kinda big for a few minutes. The other form of power would be infectious disease. One hand washes the other.

NIW- have you not been reading my Iraq Reports?!!

Iraqi, U.S Soldiers Light Up Neighborhood MNF-I BAGHDAD — At first glance it doesn’t look like much: a construction site with a large wooden box strapped to a forklift, a crane, approximately 15 Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers, and a small pile of equipment. Such was the humble beginning of a project designed to deter militant and extremist activity, improve public safety and security, and ease the burdens on the growing Iraqi infrastructure. Street lights are being installed – solar-powered street lights to be precise. “The 4th Infantry Division has been the driving force through this project. (They) came in and said, ‘We want to do something to help the people, the Iraqi Security Forces,’” said Capt. Adam Levitt, a native of El Paso, Texas, who is currently serving on a military transition team from 4th Inf. Div., MND-B, as the engineer advisor for the 6th Iraqi Army Division.
From day one, the project has come from the 4th Inf. Div. and MND-B, he said. Levitt, along with Darryl Steadman, who is a civilian advisor, a translator and approximately ten IA soldiers, began to install the first four of 100 solar powered street lights June 19. Since the lights are solar powered, they do not place any burden on the Iraqi electrical grid. “Right now, the infrastructure won’t support it (this many new lights). Although Iraq is working on the electrical grid and the infrastructure … it’s not quick enough; we need something now, and this seems to be a pretty good solution,” said Steadman, a native of Denver, who is part of the military assistance team and Iraqi assistance group for the 6th IA Div., military transition team, 4th Inf. Div. Steadman is currently working with the 6th IA Div.’s engineer battalion. The lights also have other benefits. “We know this (project) is going to make a direct impact on the populace,” said Levitt. “It’s removing the darkness, the safe haven for the terrorists, for criminal activity.” Areas of little or no visibility around the road lend themselves to the emplacement of explosively formed projectiles and improvised-explosive devices, said Steadman. The lights will also benefit Iraqi Army soldiers, who work at nearby tactical check points and entry control points. “We’re already getting feedback from some of the guy’s out at the TCPs. (They) are getting pretty excited that they’re going to have some light,” said Steadman. According to Col. Ahmed Khalifa, a native of Baghdad, who serves as the commander of the engineer battalion, the lights will provide the only light at night for some areas. The installation of the first lights went smoothly. A group of IA soldiers set the light pole into place and, with Steadman’s assistance, made sure it was level and secured into place. Two other IA soldiers, in a wooden box attached to the forklift, bolted the light fixture, solar panel and its support equipment into place. “They want to be involved in this on a level that will show at least us, as advisors … that they can handle this on their own and that they’re ready to take on their mission with very little help or assistance from U.S. or coalition forces,” said Steadman. “This project has been extremely rewarding. There is something very special about seeing something evolve right in front of your eyes,” said Levitt. “Everybody’s picking up a wrench; everybody’s carrying heavy equipment. You don’t need a translator for that.” For Steadman, who served in Iraq in 2003-2004 as a member of the U.S. military, said that although he feels Iraq still has work to do, the country has come a long way. “I think this gives confidence to the people. People are driving up and down and seeing lights going in. What kind of message does this give to the people? We’re here to help, and we’re going forward; we’re not stagnant,” said Steadman. The lights, which cost approximately $4,000 each, will eventually be placed in the Muthana, Douhra, Ghazaliya and Abu Ghuraib sections of Baghdad and in the city of Taji.
