Eeenee Meenee Mynee Mo...

He asked me who do I support, Obama? Clinton? McCain? I looked at him puzzlingly. I don’t give a damn I said. His facial features cringed into that of a man in his 80’s. Became all wrinkly and red. Its as if I had just kicked him in the you know what and told him to F OFF. Whats the big deal if Im not interested in who becomes Iraq’s next slayer? Is that a crime? Politics is a dirty dirty game, besides, what difference is it gonna make on WHO wins? They all have similar agendas towards Iraq if not the same. All roads lead to Rome as the saying goes or is it Baghdad now? So yeah, unfortunately, or maybe fortunately I can actually care less.

I guess that answer didn’t deter him from continuing. Maybe he was bored and needed someone to talk to. Yeah I think that’s what it is. He continued, Obama is black you know. I rolled my eyes waiting for the next big revelation. If Obama becomes president, that’s a first you know. That’s definitely a first in my life time you know. But you know, its interesting you know that you don’t care you know? I was gonna start pulling at my hair if he didn’t stop using the “you know” all the time. I managed to fake a smile, wow, never thought I had that gift before, and said ok, lemme ask YOU this. You have been here as long as I have, who is the Iraqi PM at the moment?

Al Maliki ofcourse, he said immediately with the smuggest smile on his face. It was as if he just answered to the question of “whats 67890 multiplied by 3456” in 30 seconds. Very good, I said. Now what religious group is Maliki affiliated to? Smug smile disappeared and was substituted by a frown. Then the smile reappeared and he said I know that, he is affiliated to that guy, Muta. I cracked up laughing at the name. Hmmm, Muta, it does suit Muqtada doesn’t it. Had he said Muti, I woulda definitely fell off my chair, cuz Muti is slang for stupid. It actually means a baby donkey in Iraqi.

Anyhow, after I recovered my composure, I said sorry, wrong answer. Although close, but wrong. And so the point Im making is, if YOU don’t know about MY country’s politics, why SHOULD I, be interested in yours? I only said that to get on his nerves and make him regret talking to me in the first place. Well, no, no, you should care, he said. I shook my head, look, be it Obama, McCain, or Clinton, they are ALL the same for me. Be it a black man, a white woman, or a yellow transvestite, I don’t care. I honestly don’t cuz at the end of the day, none of them can fix whats broken. And Iraq IS broken. If they pull the troops, we are doomed, if they keep the troops we are doomed. Solution is not in their hands anymore. It used to be one day, but they missed that train. They either missed the train, or they skipped the train, Im still debating that with myself.

The solution is with none other than the Iraqis themselves. Surge or no surge, it stopped making a difference. Kinda like making chocolate mouse. Key ingredient is using COLD CREAM. If you use room temperature cream instead, no matter how much you beat it, it will never end up as fluffy as the cold cream, hence you end up with something other than mousse, more like a pudding. So no, Im not gonna lose any sleep over the elections. He sipped his green bean coffee, shook his head and walked away. Yaaaaaaaay, finally...

And by the way that’s not just MY opinion, ask any “ordinary” Iraqi working with me about the US elections, they will simply tell you they don’t really care. All they want is for their Iraq to become whole again. Bush Senior, messed us up. Bill Clinton, messed us up. Bush Junior F’ed us up. I wander whose turn is it next. Eenee Meenee Mynee Mo…

The last three US Presidents have definitely made mistakes in Iraq. I guess calling them mistakes is kinda putting it lightly, ha?

You are right - in the end it is up to the Iraqis to reconcile and rebuild their country. It is very difficult, given what has happened.

“A businessman told me a story: Al Qaeda came to his house and killed his son in front of him to force him to swear allegiance to him. Six months later, they came back and beheaded his six-year-old granddaughter ‘just to make sure.’ This country has been through a trauma that makes rebuilding very difficult.”

God help Iraq!

NIW,

I agree it is the responsibility of the Iraqi people to make your country whole again. I also think the troops should leave, obviously they are not wanted there and who are we (Americans) to try to force Democracy on a culture that obviously does not want a democracy. What are your thoughts on this?

Honestly, I don't really care much who wins this time, either. Obama seems to have a lot of passion, but it's not really DIRECTED at anything as far as I can tell, which I find confusing. How can he be that worked up to start changing things, but he hasn't decided what exactly needs to be changed yet? I suspect he would be a President much like Bill Clinton... poll driven. McCain seems like a practical but uninspiring man. At the end of the day, I don't really have a preference between the two. If Hillary is the democratic nominee then everything changes for me, because I can't stomach the idea of Hillary Clinton being the next President of the USA.

"Hola" means "hi", "hey" or "hello" in Spanish

How tragic...I saw the craziest looking brown transvestite the other day at the Gas Station. Very wealthy, in a huge SUV. His? nationality was from somewhere in Asia, probably Iraq, who cares. He looked at me and I thought, "Why can't you people just leave me alone." Truth was I wanted an explanation for his coordinated arrival in my living nightmare. Another question was the emotional state of the Big Brown Human. Maybe he didn't feel safe behind that giant steering wheel. Maybe I look like him in some way? I said to myself, "Hola Ziggy MArley, Hola HR, you junkies done? The Stand has a Pyromaniac we need to rule Hogtown. Of course I was thinking of an Angel that wasn't hooked on a feeling. Then again the country burns and no one feels a thing 'cept the jet lag. I refuse to go anywhere until they explain flight. Truth is in no way a feeling. Like being the child flown half way across the world into "Tears" just to prove that "actual" flight is not a feeling. Officer! Officer, the Apocalypse is an Inadequate depiction and/or explanation for my robot Endoskeleton, Oh God, The Blood... or God ewither. HE me he me sissy closet homos everywhere...

mojo and Kathy, yes, solution is now with Iraqis themselves. But Kathy, the way you state your comment is somehow demoralizing. You have to distinguish between the government and the people. Its the government that doesnt understand meaning of democracy. For them democracy only meant giving them more power, more chairs to sit on. While the Iraqi public, they sure as hell wanna live in peace.

At work, my Col said something very true. He said that the Iraqi government is not taking any initiative in solving issues themselves because they have become accustomed to the US forces solving these problems for them. Ie, they have become far too dependant on the forces. If and when the forces leave, there will be mayhem Kathy. A bloodbath is an understatement. At the same time, things cannot continue the way they are now. They simply cant for the sanity of the Iraqi people. A major change has to take place. What is it? A whole new government based on qualifications and not religeous affiliations. Will that happen? NOPE, not in my lifetime I dont think. But I also agree with you wanting to pull the troops out. Its not their fault that things arent going the "right" way, its your government's fault.

Hey Olaff, I may be in the UK sometime in April, will you be there?

PG, can you give me a website that outlines each of these candidate's outlook on Iraq? I tried to google it but maybe you know better sites.

Hey EM, you make an excellent writer, have you ever thought about making a book?

February 27, 2008 at 6:04 AM

I like this page setup better; alot easier to read with the picture in the corner instead of over the words.

I was in a relationship for 4 years? I had nothing in common with her. Completely mechanical, my memory was completely dead. Just a couple of machines. The sex was horrible...
We were never ever the color of Red. The only thing that could save the bedroom was alcohol abuse? Well ever since the breakup my brain slowly started working. I've managed to understand every riddle this planet had to offer. Then I quit drinking because the race that is Human is God awful. I'm sure my wife that tells the truth will show up... or I'll shoot myself. The End! Now I make books! With words. Right? Words? Hmmm. What's up with the mastered super humans all around me? and why can't they share?

February 27, 2008 at 7:45 AM

PG, can you give me a website that outlines each of these candidate's outlook on Iraq? I tried to google it but maybe you know better sites.

This is the best site I know of for that:

http://www.cfr.org/publication/14761/

Obama and McCain are actually nearly opposite on their stated policy for Iraq:

Sen. McCain (R-AZ) continues to support the war effort, and is one of the most outspoken proponents of Bush’s surge strategy, even arguing that the escalation does not go far enough. He supported the president’s efforts to increase the size of the U.S. standing military by 92,000 soldiers and Marines. On improving Iraqi security, McCain cautions that regional talks with Iran and Syria may not prove effective. “Our interests in Iraq diverge significantly from those of Damascus and Tehran, and this is unlikely to change under the current regimes,” he says.

In January 2008, McCain drew fire from his Democratic opponents when he said it "would be fine" with him (CNN) if the United States stays in Iraq for another 100 years. Later, he clarified, saying it is "not a matter of how long we're in Iraq, it's if we succeed or not."

Early in the war, McCain was highly critical of then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's handling of the war. In 2004, McCain said he had "no confidence" (MSNBC) in Rumsfeld, and advocated for a significant increase in the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.

(That's only a partial of McCain's Iraq position, more on that link)

Sen. Obama (D-IL) writes in Foreign Affairs that the United States needs to move beyond Iraq and “refocus our attention on the broader Middle East.” One of the few presidential candidates who opposed the war (PDF) from the start, he says there is “no military solution” to the situation in Iraq. In January 2007, Obama proposed the Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007, which would reverse the troop surge and redeploy U.S. troops to Afghanistan and other locations in phases. He favors more funds for U.S. military equipment like night-vision goggles and reinforced Humvees, though his recent refusal to sign a war funding bill came under criticism from presidential aspirant John McCain (R-AZ), who, among other things, accused the senator of misspelling "flak jacket." Under Obama's plan, there may be a residual troop presence (NYT) in Iraq for security and training purposes. His bill has not yet been voted on.

In September 2007, Obama released his plan (PDF) to "responsibly end the war in Iraq," calling for a complete redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2009, starting immediately. He also advocates a UN-led Iraqi constitutional convention in order to forge national reconciliation and to reach compromises on federalism, oil revenue sharing, and "de-Ba'athification." As president, Obama says he would establish an "international working group" to solve the Iraqi refugee crisis.

Obama opposes the establishment of permanent U.S. military bases (USA Today) in Iraq.

Obama opposes Defense Secretary Robert Gates' plan to "pause" U.S. troop withdrawal (CNN) from Iraq in July 2008. In February 2008, Obama said he "strongly" disagrees with Gates' proposal, and warned against waging "war without end in Iraq while ignoring mounting costs to our troops and their families, our security and our economy."

That's everything Obama is on the record with.

I personally don't find Obama's Iraq position very credible. I think he'd like to do it, just like that, but I don't think he'd try once he was in office. I wish Obama would come out with a realistic position on Iraq.

This war was not designed to end the longer the americans stay the longer they have oil and the longer they fight, the longer they make mega money through weapons deals. but as for a solution.....in my world the Iraqis would unite and kick the americans out and rebuild the country.

We all have to keep on believing that goodness will provail.
Oh and muti in South Africa is medicine !

We can only lift our hands and say " Inshala" if I knew how to spell it.?

When i lived in bahrain the women used to kiss me like 6 times on each cheek so assuming the custome is the same in Iraq mwah mwah ....from me to you.

Sorry NIW, didn't mean to come off as demoralizing, you said it perfectly (things cannot continue the way they are) and that was my point too, just didn't come out that way. All Americans DO NOT agree with our governments tactics on the Iraq issue and many other issues for that matter we have so many problems in our own country that are ignored while our government tries to force our way of life on other cultures. I would love to see Peace in Iraq as well as the rest of the world. As far as the Presidential Candidates, I WILL NOT bother to vote because there is no runner worthy of that office in my opinion, it's really scary to think that one of those morons will be our next President. Hopefully the whomever the next moron is will be better than the moron currently in office. Again sorry did'nt mean to offend you, Love your blog and if by any chance you ever vacation here I would love to send you info on places to visit.

My friend had me watch the Zeitgeist Movie...They really complicated simple non-violent solutions for understanding Life and Necessity. Movies like Zeitgeist are more addictive violence drugs then violence. Same with Michael Moore documentaries. They hook them on adrenal amplification then ask why they leave the drug of murder with denial??? Their in denial because they can't spread their skin under the Moore-Zeitgeist information database. You might as well ask them to shoot themselves in the head. Then again the Khmir Rouge already had our attention. Now we have Sun Micro and the Java programming language. Zeitgeists release date so long after the Vietnam conflict??? We candy coated Eden's Devil enhanced fruit bar? ...Man we should really balance out this capital without all the Junkie ambition... A War against Illusion? The States war against Illusion does not encompass necessity in it's entirety. Blah blah blah, It's words like freedom that marketed slavery, and on and on and on. Memory Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chunk...PGP Key Defeatist Personalities up , up and Atom.

PG, thanx for those. I guess for me McCain, is a compulsive liar. I hated his guts when he came here went to a souk with like 20 or 30 body guards and made a statement saying "Iraq is so safe, people can go shopping" or something to that effect. What an a*****

Angela, Iraqis have to unite, will that ever happen? Not so sure as slong as there are thugs managing the country, then Im very doubtful...Lol, as for the kissing, it depends, we actually kiss three times ;-) Talking of shoes, yesterday I was sooo depressed, I went on a shoe shopping spree, bought SEVEN pairs!!!!I hope the sizes turn out to be good.

Hey Olaff, I may take you up on it you know...But I dont drink alcohol, so a coke will be just fine ;)

February 28, 2008 at 5:58 AM

NIW, I myself have not come to any clear decisions on the election. Whatever the outcome, it will have a profound effect on both Iraq and Afghanistan. Those spouting "Change" seem to be reluctant to say what they mean by that. LOL, I told my dad the other day I figured it meant they wanted more of our dollars and to leave us with the change. I despise politics in general because no matter what party is in power, nothing ever seems to improve.

February 28, 2008 at 2:08 PM

to anon american that i offended sorry and you are right there are probably just as many stupid brits.

thank goodness i am neither cause the first group to jump on the ban wagon and help the americans blow up some more people will be the brits.

Neurotica,
I've got to "the-wet-does-not-care-if -it-rains" point along time ago. And now I only hope that it gets better for our children.
My 18 months little girl was born outside Iraq. I thought that was a good start for her to be emotionally detached. But things got F'ed up and I had to take her back to Iraq. I just hope that I can get her out of there before she is old enough to remember Iraq.

February 28, 2008 at 6:25 PM

[NIW] Bush Senior, messed us up. Bill Clinton, messed us up. Bush Junior F’ed us up.

Well, the US (and everyone else) came to Iraq since 1991 to solve it's own problems, not those of Iraqis and continue to be there for that reason. And Iraq had become *a* center of those particular problems.

While its fashionable to blame American presidents for screwing things up in Iraq and Saddam after that. But the same dysfunctionality that Iraq is wrestling with today is the same reason that Saddam was able to seize control for 30 years and would continue to hold control as Iraqi devolved over the next 10.

The truth is that the solution was never in Dubya Bush's hands and it seems to me he knew it. He gambled the whole farm on the Iraqi people themselves. He's still biding his time, waiting for his bet to pay off.

[NIW] While the Iraqi public, they sure as hell wanna live in peace.

Some do. Some don't. That's the problem in a nutshell.

If the US military leaving meant that Iraqis would be left in peace for better or worse, I'd be all for bringing the US troops home. I'm no saint. I don't care about the non-American world any more than any other American. But Iraqis won't be left in peace, will they? Iran, KSA, Syria, Turkey, and AQ will all move in to take their piece. Its not just about the Iraqis. It never was.

Finally, I don't understand why it is fashionable for some bloggers throw in the towel just when AQI says they're on the run, the insurgency has come in from the cold, and Sadr has chosen to stay at home while he finishes his Quds Iman Correspondence course.

March 3, 2008 at 6:23 AM

Right or wrong, I confess I had been waiting for you to express an opinion on the US candidates. Your opinion on what is going on in Iraq holds weight with me.

I like Obama and I like that he is intent on removing troops from Iraq asap, but I have wondered what you thought of him and if you thought that removal would send Iraq into a tailspin. So much of what I read in the media is such bullshit and you might not be the most authoritative source in the world but I do feel that you write from the heart. Whether it is right or wrong of me, I care about your opinion.
