The War of the Playgrounds...(Updated with BBC Podcast)

I waited till this morning so I can talk to my coworkers and ask them about the most amazing win of our football team. Everyone was so elated, it’s just so refreshing to see those Iraqi smiles again. It sure has been a long long time since Ive seen that on their faces. Yesterday almost everyone left about after noon because of the curfew that was put in place, and in fear of what might transpire from security concerns. Only those who live in the GZ or close to the GZ remained to watch the game. I went into one of the rooms where they had prepared a huge screen for the game. I made sure to take up a seat where I can watch everything. The room was mostly filled with our IT and maintenance guys. I and probably 2 or 3 other females were surrounded by testosterone filled Iraqis. I would crack up at their comments and expressions. Its been a long time since I was in such a gathering.

As our team scored its goal, we all started jumping up and down. Each minute of the last ten minutes to me felt like an hour. I just wanted the referee to end the game. And wowwwwww, no, wowwww does not explain the scenes after that. No, it really doesn’t describe those Iraqi guys with me. They all got up from their chairs screaming, shouting, dancing, singing. It was amazing. I cried, I cried for it was extremely emotional. One of the US generals also joined the celebrations. There were a lot of the US military and expats watching the game with us. They too couldn’t believe the images of jubilation from the Iraqis. They too had smiles. They all got up and started hugging their coworkers. It truly was a moment, a moment I will never ever forget. At that time HUBBY calls me. I couldn’t hear a thing he was saying, but I kept the line open so he can hear the singing, the dancing, the shouts and screams. It felt good. Really good.

This morning, I asked everyone how they felt and what they did yesterday. One guy, N, said with great excitement, this was far more than a game, we beat the Wahhabis, he said. We beath tem and showed them what Iraq is. We broke their noses (An Iraqi expression). I smiled, for it seems everyone took the football as a war. Just like I did. Everyone wanted to prove a point, everyone wanted to throw the Saudi noses to the floor, and oh yes we did. The Lions of Babylon did this so gracefully. What a team. Yet even with this joy and happiness, some countries didn’t allow the Iraqis to share their rare celebrations. In Amman and Dimashq, police started beating up the Iraqi fans, and tearing up Iraqi flags. Funny how one anonymous reader asked me to be grateful to Jordan. Oh really??? Look at what theyre doing!!! Even in those rare and short moments of laughter, they kill it. Their hatred is so overwhelming. And when I talk about countries, I don’t mean the people, I mean the governments and their policies, so don’t take me wrong.

Everytime I take a break and then come back to my workstation, I find more and more emails of articles and Iraqi football songs from my coworkers. You can feel it in the air. Even at a meeting earlier this morning with the General’s presence he praised the team and congratulated all the Iraqis. It was nice to see everyone enjoying the moment. Everyone, without any exceptions. In a war torn country filled with rivers of blood and streets of charred flesh, it was as if God was smiling on us again. In a war torn country destructed by outside hatred and sectarian violence, it was as if, for that moment, that short moment the martyrs came alive and brought the high spirits back. How I wish I was in the red zone. How I wish I was amidst all this. The green zone came alive, and so did the rest of the country. The beeping of cars, the celeberatory fire, the loud music, brought this divided nation together. It may take us a long time to get rid of the thugs that are causing the bloody mayhem, but yesterday, yesterday was OUR war, The war of the Playgrounds…

Chris Vallance of BBC FIVE LIVE called me last night and had this interview with me. If you wanna hear my views please click on this link here (They have pretty interesting subjects but if you dont have time to listen to the whole thing you can forward it to 03:04:00and 04:15 on realplayer) Thanx Chris it was really nice talking to you

There was no violence in Aleppo where nearly 400,000 Iraqis took to the streets.

Even those who have been forced to live on the streets because of lack of affordable residence managed a joyful respite.

Anyho ...

Iraq's 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on a 71st-minute header by captain Younis Mahmoud was an inspirational triumph for a team whose players straddle bitter and violent ethnic divides. After the game, Mahmoud called for the United States to withdraw its troops from his nation.

"I want America to go out," he said. "Today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but out. I wish the American people didn't invade Iraq and, hopefully, it will be over soon."

I have been reading your blog for sometime and I really admire you style of writing, your faith, hope and enthusiasm even when faced which continuous strenuous times.

Enjoy this victory! That is the fraternising beauty of football!

July 30, 2007 at 7:41 PM

I've been reading your blogs for a long time, I really could not believe what you wrote about other Arabs, honestly for someone who grew up in England you should have been at least more civilised in describing people who all over the internet were congragulating Iraq and the Iraqis,I for once i'm so disappointed in you NIW,is it also because they are sunnis and you're not?

July 30, 2007 at 10:28 PM

Alf mabrouk!

July 30, 2007 at 10:43 PM

im kind off new with your blog... I like it a lot girl... Congratulations for that victory... Too bad about the struggles back in your country, I saw it in the news back here in my country (Dominican Republic)

Regards!!!

Anon,

I am Sunni. So your theory about NIW as a non-Sunni sinks as rapidly as does Bushco in the tarpit of history.

Screw the other Arabs. Iraq and Iraqis bled for them for many different causes in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Time and again I refer to my favorite cartoon pre-March 2003. A US soldier is raping a young woman - the embodiement of the Iraqi nation - as Arabs of all types egg him on, hoping to rape the scraps when he is done.

This is not to say that thousands of Arabs are sympathetic to Iraq and Iraqis and have tried to help.

But most, for the greater part, couldn't care less if every last Iraqi was cut to pieces.

Heck, I remember talking to one Arab woman who asked me in September 2003 when her country was going to start making money off "liberated" Iraq.

I am, however, thankful to the Syrians who have thus far kept their border with Iraq open despite all the difficulties the Assad gov't is facing.

hi,
i think its very important as individuals and as societies to be generous and very gracious to those who help us out, especially if they go the extra mile..
im sure u r a very sweet person but u need to come down from ur high horse. i dont want to go pedantic on you, but name calling and hatred never got anyone anywhere, it just leads to misery...

The Iraqis have defeated the terrorist on the playing field; now Iraqis must defeat them on the streets of Baghdad.

"About 45% of all foreign militants targeting U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia; 15% are from Syria and Lebanon; and 10% are from North Africa, according to official U.S. military figures made available to The Times by the senior officer." LA Times, July 15, 2007.

to original jeff,

us troops and iraqis are not on the same side!
us is responsible for more crimes than u can possibly imagine!

July 31, 2007 at 9:48 AM

Just a short bit of info to orijinaljeff: The rabble you mention as culprits fade into oblivian, mate, compared to the militia thugs trained & undoctrinated by The iranienaxis of evil sent over to harm our coalition forces so this is the priority sinnister iranien evil that has to be obliterated first & foremost nevermind the meaningless rabble you mention .www,bfbs.com Lars we do know what we are talking about.

TAI, first off, mabrook on our team winning, second off, i heard the syria thing from a coworker of mine, her sister lives there and thats what she told me happened. Thirdly, I read the interview and yes thats what he said, but does that mean he is right??? Does he have a plan???

Thanx Sarrouche, thanx for your encouraging words to me. Im glad you enjoy reading my posts, altho sometimes I think I leave many people angry,lol...

Anon, well believe it!!! These are MY views. And as I said, when I talk about the Arabs, I mean the government and their policies. I think theres a huge difference, dont u think. Just like Iraq, we have a bad government, theres nothing wrong with admitting that...And btw, my govt is a shiite one, and I am one too, but I hate their guts, so your theory of me not being sunni and hating arabs is vastly wrong, sorry to disappoint you...

Maya, thanx!!!

thanjmode, dominican rep, wow...I would love to go and visit one day...will u take me out for a coffee and a cig??? ;-)

Ahmed, these opinions are not mine only, come and ask every Iraqi here, and they will tell u the same. And btw, I have aphobia from riding horses...I know what u mean, I dont blv im stuck up, im just stating facts.

OJ, yes you are right. Most of the terrorist captured are from Saudi. I pity them cuz theyre being brainwashed into this hatred and barbaric killings when they should have more useful things to do in their own society. Look at the corruption their country is in. They should clean their own houses before cleaning their neighbours'.

Anon, What abt the insurgents and the shia militia???Arent they torturing their own ppl??? Arent they cutting innocent Iraqis to pieces and dumping them???Arent they raping and shooting women???Pls give me a break here

Olaff, OJ is right. Its a combination of Iranians too.The Iranians are helping the shi militias while the saudis are helping the sunni insergents plus al qaeda group. To me they are all the same, they are nothing but barbaric criminals!!!

July 31, 2007 at 7:37 PM

Hello Neurotica ,Very many congratulations again darling may you also thrash the iranienaxis of evil into oblivian & clean the whole country from these sinnister iranien agent rats sent against us in the west they the first foremost obstacle to progress in your lovely Iraq & the region in general .You have so many ideas & statements that may have been uttered bymyself exactly the same so a huge hug to a lovely lassie from home all the best luv .www.bfbs.com cheers let`s loads of PINTAS yours as always Lars walter@swedenmail.com

"
I want America to go out," he said. "Today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but out. I wish the American people didn't invade Iraq and, hopefully, it will be over soon."
"

And if the corner kick was to high or too low ... what would
Uday have done to this
footballer ???

Oh gee a footballer is now
the head of the Iraqi defense ministry ??

I think Americans should nominate
Michael Vick to be president of the USA.

1) Where does this footballer live ?? is he living in Baghdad ??
2) Will this footballer now join
the Baghdad police and
man checkpoints

How many times does Bush have to say it ... he wants the elected government to suceeed and to
be able to provide security
before US Forces leave.

So unless the footballer wants
to join the new Iraqi army ...
he should shut the hell up.

The current sad state of affairs
in Iraq is this ... Much to the dismay of many Iraqi

1) The Sunni areas prefer
American patrols then Shia
patrols/police

2) The Shia areas prefer the
Americans to the former
Baathists

Naturally both want the American forces out ... thats understood
But the mistrust and hatred
betweeen Iraqi is clear ...

Why the hell are 25 dead bodies found in the streets every day ???

Why the hell are mini-busses
and markets blown up ???

August 1, 2007 at 7:02 AM

Its good to see the Iraqi football
victory and the people identifying
with their national team which
seems to represent all Iraqis.

That said howver what Iraqi really needs is another 50,000 people
like Neuroticas "hubby" the man
is out and about in Iraq
trying to re-build ...when
he probably has numerous oppourtunities to leave ...

he is in Iraq outside the Green Zone by choice ... and he and others like him should recognized
for doing so

August 1, 2007 at 7:15 AM

i wanna tell you that i think we r all on the same page, but focusing on different details. now about the facts, u mention that ppl just want to get out of the hell that is iraq today (coz everybody is entitled to seek a better life where ever that maybe), so plz tell me what is their first destination and why (in a calm and logical manner), are the thousands heading to the US or to syria? why is that do u think? (feel free to state numbers and facts, but no excuses plz)

August 1, 2007 at 8:47 AM

NIW, Of course he is right and it is NOT his responsibility to have a plan. That isn't his job. Nor is it the responsibility of ordinary Iraqis.

If ordinary Iraqis raise their voices they are squashed like bugs.

They tried to celebrate Iraq's "unity" in the streets and paid the price.

After the Askari bombings (round 1) Shia and Sunnis took to the streets to protest this desecration.

Dozens were kidnapped and executed by Iraqi security forces.

Iraqi journalists, editors, commentators, actors, teachers, philosophers are murdered every day.

There is no one left in Iraq who can dare open their mouths and raise a finger of protest.

Compare that to the ink-blotted finger of democracy. Pffft.

It is by international convention the responsibility of the occupier to ensure security (among a long list of other issues) in the land they occupy.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the "democratically elected" government to ensure the livelihood of its people. If ordinary citizens are to have plans, then there is no need for government is there?

Besides, in a democracy does the burden not fall on the representatives to listen to their people, their constituents? Are the constituents allowed to speak up in Iraq? No, and you know why.

Besides, the idea of having a plan and such is a propagandistic construct to divert attention from ills.

When an Iraqi criticizes this or that, they are immediately pounced on - asked if they have a plan or whether they will man checkpoints.

That is to divert attention from the complaint itself. Consequently, the onus is not on the issue raised by the complaint but on the complaintant.

I wonder when everyone will realize it is the occupation that is the source of all ills in Iraq, for how it has opened the doors to Iran and regional bullying ... I hope it is not when every Iraqi either lies dead or forced to beg in other countries.

Because that would be a real shame.

The "iraqi" government itself had a direct hand in ensuring that reconstruction and security efforts fail as it - and its militias - slowly but surely hand over Iraq to Iran.

To anon who thinks the footballer should shut up. Not going to happen, buddy boy. It is HIS country, not yours. It is HIS home he cannot return to because he will surely be marked for death by those Shia Mehdi murderers who kill athletes because 1) they wear shorts and show their kneecaps and 2) Muqtada has said football is a zionist conspiracy.

Comparing this or that to Uday is childish prattle. There has been no Uday for 4+ years. This is an old diversionary tactic.

This footballer can't go home. Most of the players on that team cannot. And yet they wished they could celebrate amongst their own people.

Anon, Screw what Bush says about the "elected government". Who has more of a say in Iraq - Bush or the Iraqi people? Your answer will provide insight into how interested you are in the welfare of Iraqis.

The Iraqi people have for several months wanted this government out. It is a sectarian government, it is the proxy of Iran (check out how Tehran awarded its main man Maliki an Airbus 300), and it has failed in every task assigned to it.

And now Maliki wants Petraeus out.

Now on to other things. I call on all my fellow Iraqi bloggers to draw up two lists. One showing the pros of invasion and the consequences of the past 4+ years.

The other showing the cons of invasion and the consequences of the past 4+ years.

Then let us sit down and compare. At least it could, I say could, help us determine what went wrong and how to proceed.

Hello Neurotica Loads of hugs & congratulations may all thi translate into progress in ridding Iraq & the region from the sinnister scum across the eastern borders that ttries to thwart our efforts in having a prgressive liberal broadminded well educated nation & region .I for one would support you all the way if you put in candidacy for prime ministe or deputyx alongside A.A. it shall be great for Iraq to have one lovely broad minded educated lassie from home as prime minster or deputy shall you contemplate the thought in the impending next few years , loads of love we shall then celebrate with loads of J.Smith " Pintas" www.bfbs.com walter@swedenmail.com

August 1, 2007 at 7:01 PM

Hello again Neurotica ,I must agree with loads of what the good O`l chap "truthaboutIraqies said " he is quite astute in his assesment of the whole matter at hand the present govt. being "puppetes of the axis of evil iranien scourge of the region " is spot on me O`l mate I take my hat off to you. When we have levely people like Neurotica leading the nation in cohesion with the region in the right commonwealth friendly mostly direction then we shall celebrate my great lovely mates .Loads of the best of British & kindest regards to you luv Cheers here is to some delicious "PINTAS" www.bfbs.com walter@swedenmail.com yours as always Lars

August 1, 2007 at 7:29 PM

Ok TAI, lets assume they leave, can you tell me what will happen, and what would you like to and who would you like to lead a government? Do u think our army is ready to protect this country from outsiders??? Seriously Im curious about how you see the future, the near future that is, if the coaltion forces leave. You may be able to convince me. Oh and one last question, how will we get rid of the shia miltias (badr brigade and the sadrists) together with the sunni insurgents (al Qaeda and the saddam supporters)?

Anon or Ahmed, I guess you are in Syria, thats what my sitemeter tells me. Anyways an answer to your question, is syria. Almost all Iraqis are going to Syria and not the US. I know that. I am not stating otherwise. Reason being, its the nearest, doesnt need visas, and easier to get in. I guess one of the very few choices the Iraqis have available. Again Im not saying otherwise. But, in the last 3 days, the US embassy in Amman has given almost 90% of the Iraqis I work with, interview dates for the green card. Dont you think thats good news??? My point is, if an Iraqi goes to the US as a refugee, he WILL NOT be treated the way he is in the ARab countries, cuz the majority of those countries are in violation of human rights. Let anything happen to an Iraqi in Britian or US, oo shoof ishon how many ppl will protect him. But who protects them in jordan or syria??? ARe you telling me that jordan or syria treat IRAQIS in a good and humane manner??? Zeyad's blog, www.healingiraq.blogspot.com had something abt it a few days ago, not sure why he removed the video. Anyways, they treat them really really bad. Thats all im saying. I will write more in details i guess in a post. We both, I believe want whats good for our people, moo???But I still wont say thank you to any of those countries not even the US, cuz they could have done much more for the Iraqis in helping them to get out of here...

August 2, 2007 at 5:36 PM

For the First time since i've been here I flied the Colours of Iraq in the street!

you should see the look on peoples faces!

It was a wonderful days was it not?

lots of Saudi's on the street came over to shake my hands and say Mabrook! they were happy for us too.

August 2, 2007 at 6:19 PM

Whether the US stays or leaves one thing is certain - violence in Iraq will continue on the level it has been on since the start of the war. It's a country full of extremely violent people. It's been that way for decades. The best thing - for the troops sake, their families and the Iraqis would be for them to leave soon. Nothing and no one is going to stop the militias killing and destruction, they're on a roll now and it's gonna be awhile before they decide enough is enough.

The US of course is partly to blame for all the mess that has gone on there but they can't be responsible for iraq's safety forever, nor can they be responsible for invading outsiders- assuming if that occurs. The job of the troops is to kill, well they've done far more than enough of that. It's about time they pack up and leave.

August 2, 2007 at 7:07 PM

Jason, bravo. Believe me, as much as I support the Iraqi resistance, I still cringe at the thought of American mothers having to be told they lost sons and daughters in Iraq.

We understand grief - we have been grieving for decades. We do not want you to grieve. We never wanted this war.

WMD, Saddam, Al-Qaeda, enough ... enough excuses. Let us rebuild our own houses.

Believe me, had America done everything right and transformed Iraq into Vienna, Iraqis would still revile you and seek your blood if the Marjaiya and Sistani from Iran instructed them to.

August 2, 2007 at 7:27 PM

NIW, I would like for Iraqis who lived in Iraq for the past 40-50 years to lead a government.

These are people who know the country, have stayed their ground despite the wars (1975, 1980-1988, 1990-2003, 2003 - ?), who have worked within the system, who rebuilt after the colossal destruction wrought by US warplanes in 1991.

Those who single-handedly resurrected the telecommunications infrastructure, the power grid, the bridges, the water filtration plants - all these were targeted by US warplanes and destroyed and ALL were fixed using Iraq ingenuity and sheer willpower.

This work force will be comprised of technocrats, Baathists, secular and non-secular persons.

Not a Baathist myself, but the de-Baathification in Iraq was the worst possible decision enforced by Bushco much to the protestation of Jay Garner.

There were 5 million Baathists in Iraq, most of them Shia. Most of them members of the Baath party for name only.

200,000 professors, teachers and school staff were fired by the new ministries run by people with barely high school degrees post-2003 invasion.

Then they were systematically targeted. Some 600 of Iraq's brightest intellectuals have been assassinated - not by "insurgents", but by forces that rode into Iraq on US tanks.

Badr, Sadr, Al-Qaeda; all non-existent prior to the US invasion and all directly responsible for the erosion of our school system (I s'pose you heard about the exam fiasco this summer).

The Marjaiya have also chosen to single-handedly revise the curriculum. Secularist thinking out, fundamentalist Qum thinking in.

On the Sunni front, Al-Qaeda has been wreaking havoc in Iraq just as equally as the Marjaiya.

Again, all these forces non-existent prior to the US invasion.

Iraq has one of the most advanced work forces in the Middle East; before the sanctions Arabs used to come to OUR universities for higher learning because WE had some of the brightest scholars.

Now, as you well know, these people have escaped (many ended up on the roadside with drills through their heads) and are begging to teach in foreign universities.

Iraq has a medical crisis unparalleled in the world; our doctors are killed by various factions if they simply follow the Hippocratic oath. They are gunned down by US forces, kidnapped and killed by Sadrists and Al-Qaeda.

Two girls were shot and wounded by US troops yesterday. A man was killed in his car last week. Sharqiya TV showed footage of US troops raiding an elderly woman's house after six of their troops burned to death in an IED-hit hummer. They then shot a taxi driver who was picking up a woman and her daughter. They tried to revive him but he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

Our people are traumatized by three: The US occupying force, the Badr/Sadr legion (Iran) and Al-Qaeda (Saudi).

Again, none of these existed prior to the invasion.

I could write down all the destruction to our infrastructure: what Iraqis rebuilt during the sanctions without outside help and without imported materiel, the US destroyed since 2003 and then allowed Halliburton and others to pretend to fix as they siphon billions in our national monies.

An Iraqi report three weeks ago indicated that our country made $42 billion in oil sales since 2003. Not hard given the $ of a barrel of oil has been in the 60-78 range for the past 4+ years.

Where is that money?

All the heavy machinery Iraq had was smuggled to Iran. All the spare parts and materiel was smuggled to Jordan. All the military equipment not destroyed during the invasion was smuggled to Iran.

Report after report after report after report showing Iraq ceasing to become a viable state. 1/3 to 1/2 of Iraqis live in poverty.

More than 5 million live outside Iraq, another 2 million are internally displaced.

Go live with one of those families for one day, and then come back and tell me how you can defend the status quo.

Did I say status quo? Sorry, didn't mean to. That would indicate that things are at a standstill whereas they are not. They are in constant deterioration.

The elections in Iraq have been the scourge of the country - teaching people who have been blighted by 13 years of debilitating sanctions how to stain their finger tips as they vote for their God emobdied in Sistani.

The constitution? A parchment that is so poorly written it couldn't be valued more than the toilet paper which many Iraqis cannot afford to buy. And different sections of the country received eight different versions of the constitution for the referendum.

You might not appreciate this quick review but to chart a course forward, we are COMPELLED to track where we have come from.

Again, it is the technocrats that I want to lead Iraq. Question, why did the US disregard them entirely and simply resorted to the "opposition" figures which it propped up at the December 2002 London conference?

Why did it resort ONLY to Hakim, Talabani, Barzani? How could the US work with Badr, clearly an instrument of the most fundamentalist of Persian Mullahs?

Why did it disband the army? This leads to your question about do we have an army.

So, here is what should happen. The US should fix its mistakes. It should outlaw Badr AND Sadr. Every Iraqi knows they are the instigators of most of the violence along with their allies Al-Qaeda.

Allies? Yes, allies, because together the three aforementioned have worked to systematically cleanse areas of Iraq and unravel the social fabric of our once great, proud nation.

Second, the US MUST disband the current army. It isn't an army. NIW, do you come from a military family?

I do. Have you seen the way this ragtag army marches? There is no discipline whatsoever.

Many of your readers may not be privvy to Iraqi TV footage of military academy graduations.

A farce, I tell you. They cannot march in unison, one of the first principles of teaching discipline in a military outfit.

Every master o arms knows this.

Speaking of outfit. Please. Their clothes or so humdrum it is a shameful display of military misconduct.

I can go on and on. The Iraqi army today does not shave. The police do not shave. They don't need to. There is no decorum. In the old days, I know of people jailed because their cheeks were coarse indicating they hadn't properly shaved.

All part and parcel of creating and maintaining discipline.

Another anecdote. An Iraqi army unit took on "insurgents" in Mosul during several campaigns recently.

The US-trained soldiers could not even fire mortar shells back at the "enemy". They repeatedly misfired, and when they did manage to lob a shell or two, they missed by a barn. And when taking orders they do not reply in the manner subordinates must when addressing higher ranking personnel.

Compare that to the "insurgents". Na3am sayidi, they respond when given orders. Watch some of the "insurgent" videos.

So, to answer your question, no THIS army couldn't find its own arsehole much alone an enemy unit.

How to resolve this? Disband it. It is infiltrated by militia, by peshmerga who fight for Kurdistan NOT Iraq.

Rebuild the OLD army. It was and is not Saddam's army as the propagandist would have you believe. It is Iraq's national army, which fought against Iran, against Israel in 1973.

The Iraqi army has been around since 1922. We were celebrating January 6 before Saddam ever joined the Baath.

And we will celebrate January 6 after the US occupier is kicked out.

This is what the US must do. It must strengthen nationalists and secularists as well as religious moderates, not those who tell us that icewater is haram because it did not exist in the time of the prophet!

But the US won't do any of this because it knows it will have to face off with Iran's minions. It knows it will have to battle Badr, which it allowed to be entrenched in Baghdad as well as Sadr.

The US military, in short, is cowardly. Every one knows what the solution is in Iraq but no one wants to move towards these solutions because they fear loss of troops. Meanwhile, it is OUR people who bleed and OUR country which tears apart.

So, what do I see in the near future? More chaos, more violence, more bloodshed BUT with light at the end of the tunnel. Right now, these elements exist shrouded in darkness, darkness borne of Qum and Tehran and Riyadh.

If the US military withdraws, the militia and Badrists will be purged. They will be killed in the streets like dogs.

Because their protectors will have left. Maliki, Jaafary, Hashimi, Roubaie will all escape, some to Iran, some to London, some to Brisbane.

Which is a good thing. The US military is shielding these murderers.

Scaremongering, I have had enough of it. For three years we heard "if the US withdraws there will be civil war". Poppycock, what is going on in Iraq now? A picnic?

Basra is in civil war as Shia kills Shia. The south is in civil war as Iranian Shia kill of nationalistic proud Arab Shia.

Baghdad - 80% is controlled by Badrists and Sadrists. Anbar is controlled by Al-Qaeda, who are dwindling in number as the patriotic resistance and Al-Awda kill them off.

Mosul is the chessboard for Turkey, Iran and the Kurds.

Northern Iraq will be occupied by Turkish troops.

Enough!

The US can help patriotic nationalistic forces combat the Iranians and Saudis (US allies, eh) or it can stand aside.

Until the US does that, it will still be regarded as the greatest destabilizing force in the country.

And that is putting it mildly.

August 2, 2007 at 7:33 PM

TAI: " Our people are traumatized by three: The US occupying force, the Badr/Sadr legion (Iran) and Al-Qaeda (Saudi)".

and what about adding the fourth:Syria?

Is not Syria also involved in our blood too? didnt they work from day 1 to ensure destroying the country along side with Iran?
Arnt they responsible for part ( yes part not all ) of all this violence we are witnessing?

but you can never acknowledge that, as they endorse your so called resistance.yeah sure!

" as the patriotic resistance and Al-Awda kill them off".

so this is whats all about ha? al awda?

United you stand, divided you fall.
Water shortages, food shortages, lack of medical facilities....how much longer can Iraqis survive as a nation of people?
How long will it be before a substantial proportion of the population perishes from hunger or water born disease?

The signs are now all there for a genocide.

As an American working in Iraq, it was great to see the joy this victory brought to the country.

As an American married to an Iraqi, I was so happy for her and the Iraqi people.

As an American, I was extremely disappointed at the captain's insistence that American leave his country immediately. I was disappointed by the comments made about U.S. violations of the Iraqi people. More than Saddam and his sons' reign of terror. Uh no, I don't think so.

I would never want anything to diminish the joy of this victory because, yes, I believe it could well be one of the greatest in history. It's unfortunate it has been used as a political forum to diminish mine.

August 3, 2007 at 10:22 PM

John, you continue to use the old propagandistic tool of digging up Saddam and his sons from their graves to use as excuses for what YOUR policies are doing my people.

Perhaps you missed where I earlier said this was childish prattle.

This excuse is old. No one listens to this jargon except you and the few who continue to wage their bloodlust against my people.

Try this on for size:

[This court martial effectively legalizes the wholesale killing of Iraqis. Think about it, if they kill Iraqis because they couldn't find the target they sought, we can expect dozens of Iraqis being killed each and every day in our country.

THIS IS the occupation.]

Marine Gets Time Served in Iraqi's Death

By THOMAS WATKINS

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A jury sentenced a Marine corporal Friday to time served and reduced his rank to private for conspiring to murder an Iraqi civilian during a frustrated search for an insurgent.

Cpl. Marshall Magincalda, 24, has already served 448 days in custody and was to be freed Friday.

He was acquitted of murder but also found guilty of larceny and housebreaking, and cleared of making a false official statement.

After the verdict was announced, Magincalda's attorney Joseph Low smiled and patted his client on the back.

Outside the courtroom, Magincalda's mother and grandmother wept as they embraced.

"We can take him home. God answered our prayers," his grandmother Wynoma Leesch said.

The Iraqi civilian was pulled from his home in April 2006 and shot in a hole, with an AK-47 and shovel placed nearby to make him look like an insurgent planting a bomb, according to the prosecution.

Prosecutors initially identified the victim as Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52. The name, however, was dropped from charge sheets.

In another Camp Pendleton courtroom, a jury continued deliberating over the sentencing of Sgt. Lawrence G. Hutchins III.

On Thursday, Hutchins became the first and only member of the eight-member squad to be convicted of murder in the killing. He had been charged with premeditated murder but the jury struck the premeditation element, meaning Hutchins no longer faces a mandatory life sentence.

Testimony from several of his comrades pointed to him as being the mastermind of the plot to kidnap and kill the suspected insurgent.

Hutchins, of Plymouth, Mass., was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, making a false official statement and larceny. He was acquitted of kidnapping, assault and housebreaking.

Sentencing options range from no punishment and no discharge, to life in prison without parole and a dishonorable discharge.

All eight members of the squad were initially charged with murder and kidnapping.

Four lower-ranking Marines and a Navy corpsman cut deals with prosecutors in exchange for their testimony and received sentences ranging from one to eight years in prison.

A jury last month acquitted another corporal of murder but convicted him of conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping. According to testimony, Cpl. Trent Thomas of Madison, Ill., had greater involvement in the killing than Magincalda, of Manteca. Thomas was sentenced to a reduction in rank and a bad-conduct discharge but no prison time.

The squad was pulled from the battlefield after the slaying in Hamdania.

There, are all the pro-"keep the US in Iraq" crowd happy now?

John, if your relative or child were killed, would you not demand justice? Let us assume for the sake of argument, this was your wife that was killed. It is not a difficult thing to imagine as there have been thousands of Iraqi women raped and murdered by the troops you so wholeheartedly endorse.

Would you sit still? Would you be happy with the verdict published today?

You are disappinted the game was used as political forum? Maybe you don't hear so good, maybe you missed how Talabani and Maliki used this victory till they turned blue in the face.

Maybe, you forgot how Bush used the same team's victories during the Athens Olympics to brag about freedom at the point of a gun.

Till the footballers told Bush to shove it.

I am sorry, but Younis is an Iraqi who speaks of the ills of his country being occupied.

YOU are the occupier. I don't care who you are married to.

You just can't take it when someone tells you to go away and stop raping the country, can you?

There is no justice for the crimes being committed by you and your peers. If we are to say Saddam and his sons committed crimes and got away with it for a long time, then surely the US occupier commits greater crimes because there is no redemption, no remorse and no legal system that catches up with the vile murderers.

But there is resistance. And the resistance will fight on and on and on and on.

History demands we learn this lesson.

Iraq's very soil and earth will resist you.

August 3, 2007 at 11:59 PM

August 4, 2007 at 12:18 AM

Iraq has an elected parliament
they can demand the US withdraw at any time ... lets see them do it.

Endless BS from "truth ..."
pick out a few isolated incidents
about american soldiers and ignore
the 4 years of carbombing
innocents at the hands
of "patriotic resistence"

ignore the gunning down of innocents in the minibusses
by the "patriotic resistence"

On and on the onslaught against
innocents by the "patrriotic
resistence" .... The Shia
showed remarkable restraint
for 3 years until Sammarra.

The US has taken a moderate
stance and has supported reconcilliation and inclusion
of legitimate patriotic former regime elements in government
and armed forces of Iraq ...

Sistani and others are the ones
who are being much more strict ...
But

1) They represent the largest block
of people in Iraq ...
you may not like it but they do
plain and simple the largest
voting block in Iraq at this point in time is conservative Shia

2) They are deeply suspicious of
former Baathists ...
They endured the 35 years of Saddam ... US people did not ...
So this must be taken into account
If Sistani has deep concerns
about Baathists ... he has every Right to have them ... and every right to voice them.

3) The path to genuine peace
in Iraq must come through
an elected government
and negotiations ...

4) The various Shia militias will
not give up so easily now

5) This calling for all out civil war in Iraq is stupidity ....
al - Sadr wants it because he thinks he can win and opress the Sunni .... and the Saddamites want it because they think they can win
and oppress the conservative Shia.

"then surely the US occupier commits greater crimes because there is no redemption, no remorse and no legal system that catches up with the vile murderers.
"

Greater crimes then say what
Iraqi soldiers did to the people
of Kuwait !!! Oh really please
some documentaion

If the crimes of US Forces are so great ... greater then Saddam
then why didn't Sistani call for the
immediate withdrawal of US Forces

Sistani and others need only pressure Parliament to vote the Americans out ... why does he not do it ??

Because he knows the scum Baathist
are still strong enough to kill tens of thousands of innocents ...

Yes the resistence continues ...

we saw it after the football victory when what 170 people were killed nationwide by this "resistence" ...

The resistence is resisting Iraqi
1) buying gasoline
2) buying Ice Cream
3) Shopping in Markets
4) Shia celebrating their holidays
5) Shia going to their Mosques
6) Shia going to work on Mini-busses

The footballer can say anything he wants ... but so can all the other Iraqi ... he wants US out as soon as possible who doesn't ... so

then he should do something about it ... he should urge national unity/reconcilliation ... start
using his celebrity status to generate funds for Iraqi orphanages ... or does he want to see the Baathists return and kill
hundreds of thousands of Shia.

If this man is such a great patriot of Iraq then while he was in Baghdad he should have met with
the Iraq defense ministry and
gotten a feel for their views
on the status of American forces ...

Right now in August 2007 ...
If the Iraqi Army
voted for an immediate withdrawal
of American forces what would the outcome be ???

Certainly ... since their lives are on the line their voices
should also be heard also !!!

August 4, 2007 at 7:30 AM

Truth about Iraqis,

But there is resistance. And the resistance will fight on and on and on and on.

History demands we learn this lesson.

Iraq's very soil and earth will resist you.

Let the "resistance" get started with that, then, and stop murdering innocent Iraqis. Maybe then your dumbass opinions will have some credibility.

August 4, 2007 at 7:57 PM

I think nearly 3700 DEAD US soldiers,
hundreds of dead fully-armed, fully-equipped "contractors",
more than 29,000 wounded US military personnel, some brain dead;
hundreds of destroyed Humvees and tanks,
dozens of downed and damaged helicopters;
military bases under attack EVERY day,
and some 5000 attacks on "coalition" forces EVERY month say plenty.

And that's me being very VERY conservative.

= )

As for innocent Iraqis, I just mentioned earlier how US forces shoot rampantly at cars carrying people going about their business.

On the streets of Baghdad, Ramadi, Kut, Hilla, Mosul, Baquba, Qaim - EVERYWHERE.

Check out the bombing of civilians in Afghanistan ... same as the bombing of civilians in Iraq. Same air force, same strategy, same concern for untermenschen.

So, if you really had such concern for innocent Iraqis you would speak out against such atrocities. No?

Sorry, Programmer Craig, I know you were at the forefront of the campaign to remove the sanctions against Iraq which did nothing but persecute and murder innocent Iraqis.

I know you were there at Pennsylvania Avenue, demanding Congress and the White House stop killing Iraqis.

I know you personally berated Madeline Albright when she said the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi CHILDREN 1991-1996 was worth the price of removing Saddam.

I know you protested, went on hunger strike, wrote letters of protest, shed compassionated tears for the murder of innocent Iraqis.

I was also told that when 14-year old Abeer was raped, shot and burned you were right there arresting the criminals who did this.

I also have it from the most informed of sources that you have written up a long list of every crime committed by every US soldier, every militia member, every "insurgent", every Iranian agent, every Al-Qaeda scum.

You did this because you were and still have the plight of innocent Iraqis at heart. You do not discriminate, Craig, because ANYONE who kills innocent Iraqis should be held accountable.

And your heart is so big that you have been at the forefront, often sacrificing mind and limb to ensure that 5 million Iraqis forced to flee Iraq are taken care off.

I know you were at the camps within Iraq helping the displaced there.

I know these things because you love innocent Iraqis. And you love Iraq.

You did all these things right, Craig?

= )

And that's me being very VERY conservative.

Your gleeful tally of US casualties fails to make note of the fact that it 3 years in Iraq = 1 day on Iwo Jima, for US forces.

Thanks for showing us where your heart is, though, Truth About Iraqis.

Tell me, was it really you whining and crying about how the US wouldn't take Iraqi refugees?

Do you think we should? What if one of those refugees was a person like you? What if 1% of them were like you? 1% of 2 million Iraqi refugees is 20000 people. Do you think we should allow 20,000 would-be terrorists into the US? Just to alleviate the suffering of the 99% who probably aren't murderous dirtbags like you? And what if the percentage of Iraqi refugees who are actually would-be murderers (or actual bloody handed murderers) is higher than 1%?

Tell me, ToI, what would you do to Americans, here in America, if you could?

No. When the 99% (or whatever the percentage is) of Iraqis who are decent human beings eliminate the people like you who are in their ranks, then we can talk about allowing Iraqi refugees into the United States.

How much do you love Iraqis, ToI? Are you willing to remove yourself from the Iraqi gene pool, so that other Iraqis will not suffer due to your insanity? Tell us. We want to know.

August 5, 2007 at 3:49 AM

Craig, I grew up in the US, which you fail to acknowledge every time I mention it.

I travelled throughout the US, took a road trip just like my muse Steinbeck did in Travels with Charley. Drove up from San Dimas, CA, up through Vegas on to Utah then a straight line across the Great Plains. Visited a relative in Lawrence, KS.

Louisville, KY was my fave city, by the way. Until I settle in Austin for a year. That became my fave city in the US.

Didn't like West Virginia much. Spent time in DC, then went back up to NY. I have been to Seattle, most of TX, MI, Illinois, MA.

The gothic scene in Boston is alive and kicking, I can safely return.

Have probably seen more of the states than most Americans have.

Consequently, I can safely say that a majority of Americans are simple, charitable, kind and welcoming. However, their media distorts all of that, plays bogeyman politics to nurture a feeling of paranoia. Unlike your racist bigoted statements about Iraqis, I believe that goodness in America is not the exception.

Oh and get this Craig, I was in New York the day before yesterday visiting an old dear friend dying of an incurable disease.

She is Jewish. I visited my old school where I taught briefly in the mid-1990s.

So, take your winging about who I love or hate and stuff it.

Or better yet, go protest at the department of homeland insecurity.

Sue them.

Do you think we should allow 20,000 would-be terrorists into the US?

Tsk, tsk. Your racist colors show again Craig. But then they always do. You presume Iraqis are terrorists just like your friends in the military who believe all able-bodied Iraqi men are terrorists.

Which is why you lose. You have no sense of human compassion.

And please, don't tell me you lost 3000 in 9/11. Tragic, yes. But Iraq loses that many every 6 weeks.

Remember when Powell told Bushco, you break it you own it.

Coming home to roost, baby.

The US in July allowed 47 Iraqis into the US. That is by far the lowest of any other country including the UK, Holland, Austria, Denmark, Germany, DESPITE US promises to alleviate the plight of Iraqis.

How many Iraqis who were naive enough to work with US forces are now begging on the streets of Jordan and Syria?

They feel betrayed and angry.

Even those who have worked with US forces have had their homes raided, their relatives carted off.

They are turning against you, Craig.

Tsk, tsk. Craig, give up. Iraqis will win come hell or high water.

August 5, 2007 at 4:51 AM

Craig, I grew up in the US, which you fail to acknowledge every time I mention it.

I seem to place less importance on where you "grew up" than you do. I don't care where you grew up. I don't care if you are a "homegrown" terrorist or a foreign terrorist. It doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

I travelled throughout the US, took a road trip just like my muse Steinbeck did in Travels with Charley. Drove up from San Dimas, CA...

I doubt that. San Dimas is a small town. I suspect you just saw me mention that I live in San Dimas, and you thought you'd push my buttons a little, right?

So, where'd you live in San Dimas, then, buddy? We do have some Arabs around here, though I've never met an Iraqi. Then again, I don't usually ask people where they are from.

I know for sure we don't have any Arabs in San Dimas who talk the kind of smack you talk. Bad for the health and all that. This isn't Berkeley :O

Have probably seen more of the states than most Americans have.

Or, so you say, but you are a liar, so who knows?

Unlike your racist bigoted statements about Iraqis, I believe that goodness in America is not the exception.

Yes, I can see that you believe that with every comment you make about Americans.

Oh and get this Craig, I was in New York the day before yesterday visiting an old dear friend dying of an incurable disease.

Such a humanitarian, you are.

So, take your winging about who I love or hate and stuff it.

Oh, yes, you've definitely proven me wrong with all your unsubstantiated claims about your inherent goodness.

I have a bit of news for you.... good people don't say the kinds of things that you say.

Tsk, tsk. Your racist colors show again Craig. But then they always do. You presume Iraqis are terrorists just like your friends in the military who believe all able-bodied Iraqi men are terrorists.

No, I believe YOU are a terrorist. Or a would-be terrorist. Your lies don't fool me, I've seen you comment on blogs that you thought Iraqis should take the war to America. And now here you are whining that the US won't allow in large numbers of Iraqi refugees, that we know absolutely NOTHING about.

Which is why you lose. You have no sense of human compassion.

Is that why we lose? I thought we weer losing in Iraq because *Iraqis* have no sense of human compassion. What do you call it, when Iraqis murder each-other by the thousand for no reason that any normal human being can understand?

Resistance? Is that resistance?

And please, don't tell me you lost 3000 in 9/11. Tragic, yes. But Iraq loses that many every 6 weeks.

To who? Who is killing those Iraqis? Iraqis. How is this my problem, and not YOUR problem? You are Iraqi, are you not?

And yet, I've never seen you do anything but support the violence that is costing so many Iraqis their lives. Can you show me some comments you made where you condemned the "resistance"? You seem to be praising that very same "resistance" that is causing all the mayhem, right here in this thread. And then you turn around and expect people to show sympathy for all the victims of the resistance that you support.

Are you insane?

The US in July allowed 47 Iraqis into the US. That is by far the lowest of any other country including the UK, Holland, Austria, Denmark, Germany, DESPITE US promises to alleviate the plight of Iraqis.

You have yourself and your friends in the "resistance" to thank for that. You don't really expect us to take Iraqis who mean to do us harm (like you) into the US, during the middle of a war, do you?

No. You don't expect that. But you'd sure love it if we made that mistake, wouldn't you?

How many Iraqis who were naive enough to work with US forces are now begging on the streets of Jordan and Syria?

How many weer slaughtered by your friends in the "resistance"? How many lost their loved ones to your "resistance"? And now you even trot your own victims out and demand we show sympathy for the misery that you and your friends created for them.

They feel betrayed and angry.

If you had your way, they'd feel dead, wouldn't they?

Even those who have worked with US forces have had their homes raided, their relatives carted off.

Some of them were infiltrators for YOUR FRIENDS, and betrayed their comrades - to their deaths. Some of them betrayed US forces - to their deaths. You would have us believe that all Iraqis are innocent. You don't even believe all Iraqis are innocent. How many times have you called Neurotica a traitor? Several, that I've seen. Your friends would kill her too, if they could, would they not?

They are turning against you, Craig.

They turned against us a long time ago. Which is why I've been calling for US troops to be withdrawn from Iraq for the last two years. There isn't anybody for us to support in Iraq. Nobody at all. I realized that when Steven Vincent was murdered by Iraqi "police".

Tsk, tsk. Craig, give up. Iraqis will win come hell or high water.

Win what? Ashes and ruin? Yes, Iraq is a great victory for Islam. That is obvious to all. It's too bad you aren't there to enjoy it, ToI. You've done so well, what with 8 million Iraqis (that's a THIRD of the population!) having left Iraq or trying to leave Iraq, and the number growing every day. You and your friends are doing a marvelous job of defeating the United States, buddy.

Thanks again for putting yourself on display for all to see.

August 5, 2007 at 8:54 AM

We just never learn:

British General F.S. Maude speaking to the people of Iraq after invading them in 1917:

"Our armies do not come into your cities and lands as conquerors or enemies, but as liberators...It is our hope that ...the people of Baghdad shall flourish, enjoying their wealth and substance under institutions which are consonance with their sacred laws..."

President Bush speaking to the people of Iraq after invading them in 2003:

"The government of Iraq, and the future of your country, will soon belong to you...We will end a brutal regime...so that Iraqis can live in security."

August 5, 2007 at 4:03 PM

You got some play book there Truth about Iraqis...A bit repetitive, but ironclad. Absolute moral authority is tough to counter, especially when you claim it in not one, but two separate countries. And all without having to actually relocate out of the "safe" one.

When the blood of an innocent is spilled "We" suffer, when the blood of an innocent is spilled "You" caused it. One day you might even admit to being a naturalized US citizen, that is, if it were to benefit your sympathic Middle Eastern reputation.

When are you going stop using the blood of others and back up that tough resistance talk by putting some of your own blood on the line. What your much praised, mystical "resistance" really need are foot soldiers. NOT, non-violent, violent blather. By all means though, don't make any hasty decisions, just mull it over, perhaps on your way to Burger King or the mall? There is still plenty of time, it's only been FOUR years, and the oppressors can't eat babies and rape everyday ya know. If "Viva La Resistance" could pry your ass out of the US they might even hook you up you with some of those super sekret 'Amerikan seeking' homing bullets they use rack up that evil oppressor sans civilian, flawless death count you keep hyping.

I was in New York the day before yesterday visiting an old dear friend dying of an incurable disease.
She is Jewish.

Now that's just a new low, even for a shameless propagandist such as yourself. Now you even offer up the life of a terminally ill FRIEND as proof to your "humane" Americanized side. Wonderful.

Shameless- Yes, I have the audacity to call you shameless, as a reflection of your character.
