I decided to do something different and post some emails. Emails here and there:
This one is from Dr A who left a few weeks ago to Michigan using the US Special Immigrant Visa:
Hi,
How are you? I'm here living good, but still feeling strange. The weather here is so cold but nice. I'm still waiting for the SSN and Green Card. we are here just spending money without any income, it is like a chain here you need to complete step by step, first SSN, Green card then driver license after all these we should get a work which is most important thing here with out work mean return back to Iraq. Till now no one of my friends here get work and i think some of them will start working as a dishwasher, I hope to find something before reaching this point, you know i prefer to return back o Iraq then working as a dishwasher.
Any way if you have any suggestion regarding to work please let me know.
I wrote him an email asking him for his CV so I can try to pass it to people I know in the States. This is the reply I got:

Thank you for your e-mail, attached you my resume and references and i hope that you can find something for me, see you know that I'm ready to work at any place in USA or out side USA, and it will be very good if I get back to my work in Iraq, Please try and we will see what will happen.
My wife and son are good, and we are spending most of our time in the house because it is cold and are afraid from cold, but some time walking at street and take a tour at the stores around us, it are very nice places. last Friday we talk the baby to the health center to complete his immunization and we did it, so we spent all night with the baby because you know he got fever.
My CV, yes i think i sent my CV to all USA, but i told you when i was in Baghdad, it is not easy to get a work in USA for some reason, first we graduated from Iraq, second they prefer US citizen, Third which is the important thing they are like us in Iraq most of the work depending on relationships. Any way we are still trying may be we can find something.
Note: about the work you know that I'm ready to get any position, forget my PhD.

So as you can see, Dr A is already thinking of coming back! He hasn’t even completed a month yet. Is there a way, any way where we can help Dr A and/or people like him who are first timers in the States? Any ideas? He is ready to relocate the minute he gets a job offer. My hands are tied, I only know one or two people that I will send his CV to, apart from that I don’t really know anyone. He already sent his CV to the company we worked for here, but to no avail. And just to let you know, Dr A was a great Program Manager. Very hardworking and extremely knowledgeable. He is in his mid thirties I presume. Maybe a search website that any of you reading this know about? Or companies that are looking for engineers. He ofcourse speaks fluent Arabic and English.
Im gonna finish up on a completely different subject. A subject that kinda pissed me off. This is an email I received just half an hour ago:
When personnel assigned to your teams depart on R&R, please ensure that you collect their cell phones prior to their departure. Be sure that all phones are labeled with the travellers name to ensure that the phones are returned to the proper person.
Now, why am I pissed off you ask? Its no big a deal, right? WRONG! What pissed me off is the principle. Cuz it seems to me that there is someone out there, someone very depressed, sitting in this compound in a closed up dark mouldy room, sulking that he/she is deployed here. He/she is so miserable that he/she is coming up with ideas and rules to make all of us here join him/her in their misery! I don’t give a damn shit about those darn mobile phones, in reality they barely work. But what if Im stranded in the middle of nowhere during my R&R transit in lets say camp stryker or victory and I need to make urgent calls? I mean please spare me. And it doesn’t really stop here. Ok the next set of emails are no big a deal, to me that is, but again, its the principle...
A colleague of mine, who apparantely does her online shopping using Victoria’s secrets website sent this email out to the IT guys:
Alright you guys, this ain't funny no more -- Whaz up with no longer having internet access to Victoria's Secret??? Maybe - just maybe - I can see why it's not allowed at work, but geeze louise, we can't even access it in our hooches anymore!
Now, as we all know, VS is about as clean a sight as you can get -- Anything even REMOTELY risque is airbrushed out! This isn't Ann Summers we're talking about, nor even Fredericks of Hollywood...Soooooo...whaddaya say, can we get access to VS restored? Pretty please???

Sorry...but we've been replacing keyboards and monitors like crazy...depending on the spray pattern. I was referring people opening up their damn sodas. Stuck keys are one thing. Sticky pages are another. Man, that soda gets every where! So, the official reason as to why VS is blocked is because it falls into one of those categories where we are required to block it. Unfortunately, it's just the way it is. Sorry. We're also doing the female population a favor by removing the temptation to shop so you can have more in your bank account. It's a community service provided free of charge :)
Again, I can understand why sites should be banned during work hours and in the actual office. But what you do in YOUR OWN room, on YOUR OWN laptop, is I think nobody’s darn business. The ridiculus part about all this is from what the guys say, they can access porn pages, but hey, women cant access VS!!! Is there a slight aroma of sexual discrimination here?

The doctor's English is a touch short of "fluent", but he sounds very competent. Suggest to him that he look to a large retail chain that is looking for "management trainees". These are generally salespeople, but there is genuine opportunity for those with smarts and a good public image.
And I think you misunderstood his statement about "getting back to my work in Iraq". I believe he means finding something which is the same as his employment in Iraq, the same KIND of work would be ideal -- but not necessary. I see no indication he is wishing or planning to return.

Another dentist relative (Iraqi who got political asylum here) has been sending out his resume left and right to work as a dental assisstant (already giving up alot, as he is a very talented dentist in his own right). No offers yet. He's starting to think of applying for work in a different field. My husband told him before he came, expect to work in a gas station for your first year....
so hard to give up everything, leave your family, your country, your education, your pride behind and come and work as a gas station attendant. But sometimes you have to start slowly before things get better.

I have a friend in Washington DC who may be able to pass it around. Did he try the universities and junior colleges? These days they hire by contract, he could also advertise himself as an Arabic teacher and tutor, you can do it part time while looking for another job and a native speaker can make up to 60 dollars an hour, maybe less from younger students. Advertise around campuses and military bases. Check the language places- go to www.indeed.com, enter arabic and other keywords for what he could teach and they will pop up. Good Luck! Send any CV to me, my friend in DC has worked in Iraq too and she is committed to helping Iraqis, she helped one Iraqi woman get to New York and get settled. The key is the SSN though but in the meantime, tutoring in any subject can bring in money because it doesn't require an SSN, its cash under the table. I disagree with the the building of such a large and fortified emabassy. I do not think that America should build many permanent structures at all in Iraq. Just build what is needed and then leave.
Maybe Dr. A could inquire with the US Military. There are many Arabs employed in teaching soldiers about Arabic language and culture, all over the country.

and I'm sure there are others... perhaps just have him search for job websites on a search engine?
Also, since he is Iraqi, the state department, or the NSA in Washington, DC may be able to use him.... have him look on those websites for job postings. He would have to pass a security clearance, but it is certainly a possibility!

Have him look for programs that take foreign born professionals back to university to recertify their skills in the USA. I know that a lot of major universities have these programs. And usually it can be done on scholarship of some sort so he won't have to pay.

I echo having him post his resume on the web sites above. He needs to gear his resume to the specific needs of the agencies he is applying at. He needs to convince them that he is the only person for the job. It may mean writing a few different types of resumes (functional, chronological, etc).
My gosh, he could teach modern Iraq history at any University!

I'm not sure if I can help Dr. A, but I'll do what I can. I know a few people down in Austin. But I'll need a little more info at least from his CV. No private information, but at least a field of specialty for example.
NIW, I am an immigrant myself; so I can relate to your friend's struggles. At the same time if he wants to have a happy, fulfilling life in the United States he should change his attitude somehow. It's typically takes much longer than one month to get a good job even for a highly qualified American and it usually takes HUNDREDS of resumes and many rejections;meanwhile it's not shameful to work at ANY legal, honest job. I came from a somewhat privileged background and I also got to wash dishes when I first came to the United States and it's something that makes me proud. I did not die, I did not return home to my parents, I was not given something for nothing. I started from the very bottom and worked my way up. Now back to your friend. He should try employment agencies; he should get a list of companies that may be interested in his expertise(from the local yellow pages), he should check out local Sunday papers. He should look at the listings on the Craig list. He should be persistent and remember that no one owes him anything. The end result will depend on his own hard work and determination. It sounds like he gives up too easy too fast.

Hi "Neurotica".. I don't know what kind of work dr A has done before. A phd is great, but a work background really works alot more in his favour. It is difficult being a "refugee" wether political or economic and having worked with them, I can tell you about Dr. S., who came to South Africa from Ethiopia, his father having been tortured and killed. He worked as a janitor for 6 months at a hospital, where he could keep an "eye" on things, on vacancies especially. Under the then existing law, he was not allowed to even seek employment. He knocked on many doors, moved into a one bedroom apartment with about 16 youths in a real slum, but really, all he needed was a little encouragement and support. Thankfully, he got that and managed to save enough for one month's rent and some prescription pads with his name. He went everywhere to get his medical registration acknowledged and then took that pad and that one month's rent and started a little practice. Mash'Allah he is independent now, and doing extremely well for himself. Dr A should not loose hope. If America doesn't cut it, somewhere there's a place for him. Its harder with a family to tend to and he has my sympathies. I don't care who thinks they are wrong or right, politics is dirty and its normal people who get hurt. "Commentators" often loose sight of that. Today, its Dr. A, tomorrow, it could be them. The wheel turns.
Anyway, practical advice_ He should search google for "Job sites" and then look for positions that interest him. Regardless of where they are. If he has a phd, he will find something suitable, and South Africa, or elsewhere, is better than moving backward, better than that sense of failure that those in power would like him and so many more, to give in to. Never give up. Never admit defeat. Never say die. Let him apply - c.v.s by the millions online cost little, and he is in a tough position, yes, but also in an advantageous one- he CAN relocate, he HAS an education and he HAS skills to offer. The world is his oyster, actually. If he can just stay positive, trust in Allah, and look out for opportunities, then give himself the ok to go wherever he needs to. Often, companies will pay all relocation costs for someone with the right qualifications. THere is hope. May he not loose it.
As for you, I notice the negativity soaking through you. Where is your faith, friend? Even in the midst of death, destruction, human disrespect, there is hope. There is always, always hope. hey perry1961, did you ever think that it's us that have the accent and are hard to understand? My husband is Palistani and I have never had a problem understanding him. Before him, I dated an indian for 5 years, bet alot of people in the indian community and have NEVER had a hard time understanding any of them!!! Just because you can't understand them does not mean that the rest of people have a hard time (something must be wrong with you). Have you ever tried learning their languages? I have learned alot of hindi and urdu and if I cannot understand them, I will speak to them that way. Why don't you try that? I'm not out to bash you but you need to realize that the US was, and has always been a nation of many and we need to take steps to help the immigrants as much as possible. The only job my husband could find that would hire him was as a cab driver in Chicago. He went to university in Pakistan but basically, that doesn't mean squat here. But yet, if you go to any other country, they accept your schooling from the US. It is alot easier to find a job when you are a US citizen. While you did offer some good suggestions on where to look for a job, the unfortunate fact is that people of arab descent and iraqis and asians are looked at immediately as a threat to us. My husband cannot also find a different job because he is Muslim. Neurotic wife, I hope you the best and that you and your husband can work some sort of compromise. I know I have had to compromise alot with my husband in Pakistan for almost a year now trying to take care of family affairs to hopefully get us enough money to get a house. We were lucky to even get an apartment because of all the hidden racial bull that is all over our country.
I am also scared for my husband's and the rest of my familiy's lives as they are in Rawalpindi, and if you do not know, that is right by Islamabad, where lots of suicide bombings have been going on and now Bhutto was murdered in Rawalpindi and I wish that I could do something to make it all go away, but the simple fact is, that I cannot. I believe in peace and so does the rest of my family, and wish the rest of the world would believe in it also. The US has so much hatred here, with people lying blatantly to your face "oh, I do not hate you because you are different"!!! First of all when you go to live in a country it is probably a good idea to learn the language. Secondly if the US is so harsh, go to some other country. I have been around the world a few times and I can promise you there is no place on earth with more opportunity and equality than the U.S. I am not saying there are not issues, but anywhere you go you are going to run into racism, favoritism and nepotism when looking for a job.
As for your wife and kids comment, yes I started on the bottom at 20 years old with a wife and two children making 14,000 a year. By the grace of God, and only the grace of God, am I where I am today.

Your example about someone owning the apartment or house a person lives in choosing the toothpaste a person buys in not even close to the same situation. If I am renting an apartment from someone of course they don't have the right to chose my toothpaste, why would they? I am paying rent. So as soon as NIW starts paying for her own internet service then she can complain, with validity, if someone is censoring what she uses that service to view.

I would like to second the recommendation of indeed.com. It is a job search website that searches several job search websites at once and compiles the results.
I would also recommend that Dr.A expand the scope of jobs he considers. It's always easier to find a job if you already have one. 1) It makes a better impression on a potential employer. 2) It reduces your stress level 3) It motivates you to find something better. The goal is to find A job and worry about finding the right job after that.
I'm college educated and my first job out of school was selling jewelry at a department store. I absolutely hated it, but it definitely motivated me to find something else.
One category of jobs that I would recommend he look at would be night shift positions. They allow you to interview for other jobs during the day. Ex. Stocking grocery store shelves, night shift at factory, department store sale tagging. (You ready all the displays and make sure everything is priced properly)
Another category of jobs that would be good to look at would be ones that are known for their high turnover. One example would be customer service support. Before everyone starts yelping that India has all those jobs, you can check yourself. My husband used to do support for AT&T. Another example that you might not think of is working for a dog kennel. I worked for one for 6 years in high school and college and we were hiring constantly. People seem to operate under the delusion that all they will do is play with dogs all day. They forget about cleaning up after them. Someone mentioned Michigan and if that is where Dr. A is the company I used to work for has two locations in Michigan, Lansing and Clinton Twp. Best Friends Pet Care. Maybe some of the other people reading can suggest other high turnover positions??
The third category of jobs I would recommend are entry level positions in the business world. Receptionist, Administrative Assistant, Intern, Mail Room Employee. The company I work for currently and my previous employer both hire almost exclusively from our pool of past and present interns. It's all about getting your foot in the door.
I know none of my suggestions are ideal for Dr. A, but I think having a job, any job would reduce his stress level a lot and make looking for the right job easier.

Whatever focused set of tasks he functions with in order to fulfill his health-care requirements are dependent on the people sharing a span of life with him. Generative life cycles are planned, health isn't hit or miss. Mistakes aren't made and coincidence is for junkies. The disease is truly remarkable. When my father lost his job growing up it took him an entire year to find a new one and when my husband lost his job it took him 6 months to get a new one. Maybe Dr.A has found a job and I hope he has but there is also a good chance he hasn't. Besides Neurotica has mentioned others without jobs in Philadelphia so any advice here could benefit them as well.

Nah puzzlepoo the comment erased itself when I decided the delete trashcan in the members login was as handy as ignorance in conceiving another embarrassment through miscommunication..if you build it they will come?
